That the subject of child psychology would never adequately be presented until the laboratory experiments upon which this subject is based are re- corded in visual and oral form, was the statement made by Dr. Buhler. Suggested as Lecture Supplements. Talking pictures could be used prie marily to supplement classroom lec= tures in child psychology, according to Dr. Buhler, who sees a second use for them as “educational suggestions,” tq which parents of children might ha access. Tlustrate Stages of Growth. To be successful, such pictures would have to be taken of children of all ages who could illustrate in minute stages the growth of an igfant frmma birth to puberty, according w Dr. Buhler. “In modern psychology everything is based on experiment,” said Dr. Buhler, “and it would be of great value if the lecture could be -demonstrated in a taking film. A talking film would be invaluable to the study of child psy- chology, as also language experiments could be shown. “In a ‘talkie’ it would be interesting to have recorded, if one could get it, the time when the babbling child sud- denly enters a specific mood of hap- piness and dispieasure and produces definite sounds for the expression of his mood,” she said. “Or when, for the first time, the child picks out one of his babbling syllables to designate a definite cect. Also very valuable, and psycho- logically very interesting and impor- tant, would be the utterances of the child while working with materials, as he gives his own names for things. Normal Background Required. Many instructions for parents or teachers can be adequately explained only by demonstrating a situation in a child’s life. Although some attem previously have been made to photo- graph for educational purposes some of the phases of child devel?munt, this never has been systematically done. “The ‘talkies’ must be more than pie- tures,” said Dr. Buhler. “They must teach something, and for this reason the set must show the nermal back- ground of life and the locale must not be an institution. To get the work done, the film operator would have to co= operate with the psychologist who could find out the most instructive ex- periments for demonstration.” PLAN MEXICAN OLYMPICS.
