1929. Y I SAT UP UNTIL 4 THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, WELL I KNOW A LITTLE JOINT L [bur Secret Ambition. MORT GREEN HAS BEEN CONFINED IN HI5 CABIN FOR YOUR DAYS WORWNG 7 BEDTIME STORIE Striped Chipmunk’s Caution. B Tet S may e Getect i 7l s "-.mstrlneh Chipmunk. Striped Chipmunk has had a great many shocks in his life. Shocks are a part of the lives of all the little furred | and feathered people. They have them every day. Of course, some are worse | than others. Any one who has a great many enemies always watching for a chance to catch him is bound to have many shocks. But Striped Chipmunk never had a worse one than he did that morning when Flip the Terrier did him & good turn. No, sir, Striped Chipmunk IN AN INSTANT HE S8AW WHO IT WAS THAT FLIP WAS AFTER. never had a worse shock than he got that morning. i You see, it was this way, Striped Chipmunk had been working to fill his storerooms. He had been gathering seeds, stuffing the pockets in his cheeks and carrying them back to store away for the Winter. He had made several trips that morning without anything unusual happening. Then, as he re- turned with an extra hig load in his cheek pockets, and cautiously peeked out of the grass to see that the way was clear to his hole on the edge of the driveway in Farmer Brown's yard, he saw Flip the Terrier make a sudden rush. In an instant he saw who it was that Fip was after, It was Shadow the ‘Weasel. —By Gaar Williams BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. It seemed to Striped Chipmunk that Jjust for a wee space of time his heart actually stopped beating. Yes, sir, that | is the way it seemed. And then when |it did start beating again it thumped s0 that it seemed to him it must be heard. You see, Shadow the Weasel is the one enemy that Striped Chipmunk fears most. Wherever he goes Shadow can follow, He cannot squeeze into a hole too small for Shadow to squeeze in after him. So, when he saw Shadow so close to his home, Striped Chipmunk received a dreadful shock. Striped Chipmunk held his breath as he watched Flip chase Shadow and finally saw Shadow disappear over by Farmer Brown's barn. The way was clear now. He could take that load of seeds into his storehouse. But he didn’t do it. Instead of that he emptied his pockets and made a little pile of seeds beside a stone. Then he sat down where he could watch the place where he had last seen Shadow. “I wonder how much that fellow found out?” thought Striped Chip- munk. “He was going right straight toward my hole. But perhaps he hadn't seen it when that dog rushed at him. I wonder if he had discovered my scent anywhere around? If he hadn't, and he hasn’t found my hole, I am as well off as I was before. But it gives me the shivers to think what might hap- pen to me if that fellow should come this way again. I don't think I'll go home for a while. I'll stay away from it. Shadow never stays in one place very long and if he doesn’t find any fresh scent of mine to lead him to my home, he may go off.” So Striped Chipmunk sat for the longest time perfectly still right where he was. He saw nothing more of Shadow, so at last he venteured to go back to the old stone wall along the edge of the Old Orchard. He had a lot of hiding places there and although that was just the place that Shadow would be likely to search for him, he felt that it would be safer for him to remain there the rest of that day than to take a chance of giving away the secret of his home, Besides, from the top of that old stone wall he could very nicely keep watch. So he spent the rest of the day there. Toward dusk he returned to his home, but he didn't return in his usual way. He went 'way round and approached it from another direction. That is how cautious Striped Chipmunk was, (Copyright, 1929.)
