J., October 15.— William 8. Kelley, sr., who claimed to be the inventor of the inflated pneu- matic automobile tire, is dead at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Graff, in Essex Falls, near here. He was 89. In the early eighties Mr. Kelley was a close friend of B. F. Goodrich, and the two men, then young mechanics, worked on Mr. Kelley's idea that man could ride on air. He made frequent trips to Ohio to exchange ideas with ‘Goodrich. Kelley In those days was associated with the H. B. Smith Machine Co. at Smithsville, N. J., makers of bicycles, which firm was said to have been the first to manufacture a pneumatic tire. Kelley also was said to have invented a tire valve which has served as a basic principle for valves now in use. Kelley never patened either of his inventions. His only explanation in re- cent years was that men of the eighties were not so anxious to surround their ingenuity with legal ‘protection, He remained with the Smith Co. until two years ago, when he retired.
