GOLOR INVADES GAS APPLIANCES Increased Efficiency and De- sign Are Disclosed at Convention. By the Assoclated Press, ATLANTIC CITY, N. J. October 15. ~—The display of gas appliances for 1930 st the American Gas Association con- vention opening here yesterday disclosed that color, which some time ago in- vaded the modern kitchen, had extend- ed to the basement and that increased efficiency and improved design had been incorporated in many important domestic devices. The exhibition opened here this morning, and convention sessions will start this afternoon with a meeting of several hundred women who occupy executive positions in the gas industry. More than 5,000 gas men are expected to register for the convention during the day and 1,000 more will arrive to- night and tomorrow. Alexander Forward, managing direc- tor of the association, said today that this convention was expected to be the largest ever held. It is the first American convention gince the death of the famous Karl Auer, inventor of the gas mantle. Auer's invention, Forward said, revolutionized the gas business of his day, because he rfected the gaslight, but today gas ighting is but a small fraction of the mm business. It was enough that a girl like Veronica should ask me to help her hide an unknown man—Roger Pell's murderer, for all I knew—but to learn my mother had entered the conspiracy, and without a word to me, was suffi- cient to shake any one.. “Don’t look as if You'd swallowed a slug, Mr. Grenofen,” said Veronica, with a touch of her old manner. “Very well,” said I. “If this is the or- der, 50 be it.’ “Agreed? Then I'm eternally grate- But there’s one other thing: Will you walk home with me?” ‘Would I like a million! “Now?” I asked. “Yes. But that's not all. Her dejection had gone and her blue eyes blazed with fun. Was it all a huge joke, I wondered—one of Ve- ronica’s “monkey-tricks"? as Seabroke would have said? 1 shook myself, shook off the glooms and horrors of the afternoon and the suspicions of the last five minutes and capered into Vemnlclu own mood. An outsider molested me, and there ‘were reasons why I didn't want a fuss made last night. Bat if an outsider molested me again tonight I should be grossly offended.” “You may rely on it,” said I, “that nobody will molest you tonight.” “Oh, I do,” said Veronica. Neverthelumé I was quite unprepared ‘when ‘she said suddenly, “Now, paw!” We were in the little Toad among the sand hills. Veronica saw first the fig- ure that moved into the road from be- tween two hummocks. I could not see the features of the man who stood in the middle of the road. But he was young and well dressed in a plus-four suit. I did not recognize his voice when he spoke. His words and tone gave me a sensa- tion of pins and needles in the knuckles, ‘When we were within two yards of him he still stood in the middle of the nar- row road, barring the way. “‘Lo, V!rvmul" said he. But only momentarily. He sank down against the same sand heap in a peace- ful sleep. “That’ll do him a lot of good,” said I to Veronica. “You haven't overdone it, Mr. Greno- fen?" “Oh, no! Thanks awfully, Mr. Grenofen.” I parted from Veronica at her gate and strolled back toward the spot where the cub went to earth. A hun- dred yards from Sandypoint I met him walking along the road, holding a hand- kerchief to his nose. He passed me without speaking. I turned and followed him past Sea- broke's toward Blackwater, and stood at the bottom of Woodcot Lane till he was out of sight and hearing. With a mind full of puzzlement and a subconscious sense of pleasure in the queer little episode, I reached home. It was nearly 11 o'clock. My mother, meeting me in the hall, whispered: “Another visitor—Prof. Laxton.” I sat down hard on a chair, “That’s awkward, Mother.” “Yes, isn't it? Did I tell you I was expecting an old friend of my family, sort of second cousin, tonight?"” “No. What's his name?" “Let me see—John, ‘I think.
