MAKES CONFESSON N SLAYING OF GRL Man Regarded as “Model Husband” Is Arrested Be- fore Body Is Found. ci—— 1 By the Associated Press. } CHICAGO, October 15—John E. | Preston, an interior decorator, whose | wife believed him a “godel husband,” | was held to the Dupage County grand | jury yesterday without bail on a charge of murder. He confessed, authorities said, to as- | saulting and slaying Miss Agnes John- | ston, 26, with whom he had a clandes- tine meeting Saturday night. Preston, at first denying he had killed the young woman, finally admitted strangling her to death. He waived a preliminary examination before a jus- tice of tae peace. The grand jury is now in session and probably will con- sider his case this week. Preston confessed to Sherlff Lawrence Hattendorf that with Miss Johnston and her companion, Miss Mathilda Murphy, he drove to a roadhouse near West Chicago, using a rented car. He had told his wife he would have to work late. During the evening Preston drank considerable liquor. The girls asked to be taken home. Miss Murphy saild he became offensive and they jumped from the car. He gave chase, catching Miss Johnston. In his confession Preston told of as- | saulting her and finally killing her as | she resisted his advances. He hid her | body under some weeds and brush, abandoned the rented car and started for home. His disheveled and unsteady condition aroused suspicion and a street car conductor notified police, Who ar- Tested him even before the crime had been discovered. 1t was not until Miss Murphy. alarm- ed by the absence of her friend, called the police and told them of the affair that the slaying became known. They found the body and Preston broke down after at first maintaining that robbers had taken the girl from him. FRAUD CASE REVIEW Convicted New Yorkers Contend Prosecution Evidence Is Not Sufficient. William P. Whitaker and John J. Me- Cann, convicted in New York City of using the malils to defraud, yesterday were refused reviews by the Supreme Court. Whitaker and McCann, with others, were chlrfed by the Government with having unlawfully used the mails from September, 1923, to January, 1928, in soliciting companies and corporations to employ them to sell their stock. ‘They would have the sentences im- posed on them set aside on the ds that the evidence was not su t for conviction: that the trial judge im- roperly instructed the jury and that e refused to give proper instructions as to what constituted conspiracy.
