JAPANESE URGE MORE WARSHIPS Naval Offlclals Request 10-; 10-7 Ratio to Equai Britain and United States. By the Associated Press. TOKIO, September 21.—With a pro- gram of eight 10,000-ton cruisers, each | capable of 33 knots and armed with | ten 8-inch guns, more than half com-! pleted, high naval authorities of Japan are publicly discussing the possibility that the government will have to lay down more fighting ships of this class in order to keep pace with the United States and Great Britain. There has been no thought of sus- pending or abandoning work on the eight new ships, four of which are al-| ready afloat, with the others due to take | to the water within 12 m-nths, 10-10-7 Ratio to Be Sought, The public and semi-public utter- | ances of naval officers, from Admiral ‘Takarabe, minister of marine, down, indicate, too, Japan's intention of in- sisting at the next naval conference on a ratio of 10-10-7 in the allot- ment of auxiliary warcraft tonnage to | Englflnd America and this country. an asked for that ratio for capital ps at the Washington conference, hut nnauy accepted 5-5-3. The higher ratio for auxiliary craft was informally ! advanced at the three-power conference in Geneva in 1927. The talk gave rise to recent news- paper reports that a supplementary program, calling for four additional 10,000 tonners, 15 first-class destroyers and a number of smaller destroyers, | submarines, gunboats and oilers, had been decided upon. The navy depart- ment later said that no announcement would be made at this time, lest it embarrass the MacDonald-Dawes econ- versations in London. It was remarked, however, that no outright denial of the reports was forthcoming. Surveys Are Given to Press. Naval officers and publicists are giv- ing the Japanese press surveys designed to support the claim for for the 10-10-7 ratio, asserting that the program which America and Britain have in hand will give each of these powers between 250,- 000 and 300,000 tons of modern cruisers of more than 7,000 tons, whereas Japan by the ccmnlelmn of her eight Nachi class ships will have a corresponding tonnage of only 108.400; that is, eight 10.000-ton thn,fi and four of the Furu- taka class of 7.100 tons each. Hence, it | is argued, that unless the two leading | sea powers agree to reduce drastically their cruiser flects, Japan must build several more 10,000-ton fighters to keep within hailing distance. Japan, it is authoritatively indicated, hopes for such actual reduction by Britain and America, thus making any | increase in the present Japanese cruiser strength unnecessary. CLEMENCEAU'S FIRST TALKIE BRINGS LAUGH Theater Patrons Roar at “Tiger's”| Remarks to Workmen in Garden. { PARIS (P).—Georges Clemenceau, “the Tiger of France,” has succumbed to the lure of the talkic. Gruffly, for months, the aged statesman had turned down every request from talkie firms, until finally, one morning, cornered in the garden of his villa at Saint Vincent sur Jard in Vendee, he surrendered. But when the film was shown at a local theator the auditors roared with laughter as the picture of the robust old man, gesticulating wildly, appeared on the screen and they heard the first words, uttered with tigerish mock ferocity: “Get a_move on, boys. in this garden all day. thing else to do.” . AGED FAVORITE OF KING TAKES FIRST RIDE IN AIR Frau Schratt, Sweetheart of Lutei Emperor Franz Josef, Flies to Zurich. I can't stay I have some- VIENNA (#)—Frau Katherina Bchratt, for 35 years the sweetheart of the late Emperor Franz Josef, had her first air ride when she flew from Vienna to Zurich. Frau Schratt, who is 74 years old, is writing her memoirs. She relates that Franz Josef was so conservative | that he was opposed to elevators being | put in the royal palace. He was likewise averse to using a motorcar, and there is only one case on record when he was induced to ride in one. That was on the occasion of | King Edwarl's official visit to Vienna. | NOAH BEERY IS SUED. | Producer, Alleging Actor A(tackedl Him. Seeks $100,000.
