THE EVENING STAR, " SUN GOD CLAINS LONGEST HOP TITLE ' Round Trip Transcontinental Plane Lands at Spokane Amid Throng. | By the Assoclated Press. SPOKANE, Wash., August 21.—Nick Mamer and Art Walker were home to- day after having pushed the glistening | orange Sun God across the continent , and back in a five-day non-stop refuel- ing flight. The small Buhl sesquiplane’s landing gear touched the ground at Felts Field | &t 5:50:40 p.m. (P. 8. T.) last night, a minute less than five days after the ship was sent into the West towards Ban Francisco, the first refueling point. Mamer brought the ship to a perfect landing and before it had been taxied into position near a temporary review- ing stand, Walker leaped into the arms of the mauling crowd that had broken through a double line of policemen and | National Guardsmen. A few minutes later Mamer, his legs wabbly and clothes | oil-spattered, climbed out of the tiny cabin of the plane. Both flyers ap- | paryntly were in excellent physical condition, but were unable to hear | ordinary conversation. | ‘Two Notes Dropped. ‘The Sun God was ordered to the ' ground by the executive committee of | the National Air Derby Association | after the pilots had dropped two notes, | one asking for sqap, water and a com- ,p]rte change of clothing for both men, “and the other 'saying “Sorry, we can't | come down vet.” Both men said the 300-l’mrsepower | Wright motor was “working like a top” | and that they had hoped they would | be permitted to continue the flight either to the coast or to the air derby at | Cleveland. The executive committee | baid it believed the objects of the flight —to show the feasibility of transconti- | nental commercial refueling systems— had been achieved and that further ! flight would be in effect an anti- | elimax, Linear Miles Record. | The linear miles long-distance record | for all time was claimed for the plane, as it flew 7,200 miles on the trip. R. M. | Wilson and Al Coppula, members of the refueling crew at Rock Springs, Wyo., | were believed to have accomplished the first night refueling contact. Less than 50 hours ago we had seen another crowd back on Roosevelt Field on the Atlantic Coast waving at us and our Sun God just as ‘Think of 'it! frantically. Yes, I'm a little tired and Art says his legs are wabbly. It may seem peculiar, but we are really more tired since landing than we were in the ship. My ears roar 'till I can hardly hear. One of the most interesting events on the last leg of our flight came yesterday morning over Belgrade, Mont. When we left Minneapolis Monday it was our intention to boom right on home. You folks back East have been reading a lot about the forest fires out in the Northwest. Every word you read was absolutely true. Because we passed over those fires and it was the smoke from these fires that made the visibilitv 0 poor that we could not find our way into Spokane last night. That is the reason we had to give up the idea of coming home and. had to remain in Montana over night. Milk Cans of Gasoline. But I've drifted away from the thing I started to tell you about. You'll have to excuse me, as the reception and our tiredniess has my mind all upset. Here's what happened to us after we learned in Montana that one of our re- fueling ships was in Minneapolis and another in Missoula, while we were over Miles City. We saw our situation was rather a serious one, because the Miles City airport is not lighted. We dropped a message telling them that if they could refuel us in the morning with five-gal- lon cans of gasoline they should build a bonfire in the middle of the airfield. It didn’t seem to us that the note had any mcre than landed when the bon- fire was lighted. The five-gallon ecans of gasoline ‘ turned out to be 10-gallon milk cans | Alled with gasoline. Immediately we | lated by President Hoover. sage to them he said: “Congratulations on the successful completion of your non-stop refueling flight across the continent and return, This was a_further demonstration of | the ever widening scope and practical | utility of aircraft.” | | Ina mes-i | | and Difficulties Fire Area. It certainly were confronted with the problem of handling those cans, which were too large to go through the top of our ship. We solved the problem by dumping the 10-gallon -cans into smaller ones and then into the tanks. h, boy, this refueling is sweet stuff! Refuelers Are Lauded. Now that we have landed I cannot give too much praise to the refueling crews we contacted and especially our | own crews from Spokane. The remark- able thing about their work is the fact | that they were inexperienced until the day before our flight started. The re- fueling crews at San Francisco and New York also made our successful |} flight possible. The Wright whirlwind motor—well, tl}:u:gs nice enough can't be said about at, We have passed over lots of air-|i dromes and landing fields. We have | seen the best—we have seen the worst | and, not because I come from Felts | Field, I must say that this airport in Spokane is equal to any of them. There's just one thing I would like to | say here. If our air had been a little better and the rivers had not been so | close to the fields we passed over you would have received better stories. I bet no less than six of my best stories went in_some river, and if we ever dn this WE DRY CLEAN= And Press Everythel:il $1 00 Call Potomac 3900 1731 7th St. N.W. WASHINGTON, D. The above question does not long remain unanswered after a glimpse of the new Straight Eight. And this is especially true if other fine cars are present for comparison. The new Straight Eight was purposed to be the finest car that Pierce-Arrow ever produced. That it should also have been a remodeler of fine car fashions could not have been foreseen. But that is precisely what happened. The long, low-swung slenderness of the new Pierce- $8200 Arrow was welcomed by fine car owners grown tired of bulk and stodginess in big automobiles.
