The stocks usually furnished a consid- erable part of the daily business, but they are now sagging and neglected. Capital Traction, however, is holding much firmer than might be expected although it is really entitled, by reason of its dividends, to hold present prices and even better. A cut in dividends, even if it does come, will not probably be below a 5 per cent basis. At 921 bid and 93% asked it shows considerable strength. Railway preferred has eased off again to.9712a98, al- though there is no prospect whatever of having dividends cut or changed at all. Two bank shares came out today at 410 for National Metropolitan com- mon, and 577 for Riggs. Commercial National Securities Co. was firm at 103, while Federal-American common closed at 42. Mergenthaler was slow, but a little firmer at 104%a104%. ‘The bond section was neglected. Havana Hotel Financing. Representing an important contribu- tion of American capital to the Cuban government's extensive program of im- provements designed to establish Hav- ana as an outstanding resort center of the western hemisphere, the Natlonal City Co. and United States Realty & Improvement Co. announced yesterday that they have agreed to sponsor the financing, construction and manage- ment of the National Hotel of Cuba, a project which will be larger than any hotel now on the island. ‘The financing of this enterprise will follow in general outline the plan de- veloped by the National City Co. and United States Realty & Improvement Co., in which a public offering takes | the form of a protected investment se- curity ylelding a liberal rate of re- turn combined with a permanent par- ticipation in the profits of the company through ownership of common stock. The financial program provides for an actual investment of more than $7.- 000,000 in the enterprise, covering the estimated cost of the buildings, archi- tects’ fees, carrying charges during coi struction, provision for working capi- tal, etc. The required funds will be obtained through the public offering today by the National City Company of $6,250,- 000 thirty-year 6 per cent income de- bentures and 62,500 shares of com- mon stock of the National Hotel of Cuba Corporation and the sale to the United States Realty and Improve- ment Co. of 14,500 shares of $6 cumu- lative preferred stock without par value, comprising the entire issue, and part of the common stock for a cash sum of more than $1,300,000. ~The debentures and common stock will be placed on the market in units, con- sisting of $100 principal amount of debentures and 1 share of common sw‘ck and will be priced at $100 per unit. Maurice Goodman, vice president and general counsel of the Radio-Keith- Orpheum it in force on July 31 the total insurance amounted to $100,122,085,000. The American Institute reak of August 9, showed sign: of tiring today under the steadily ex panding stream of profit-taking and short selling. Pools succeeded in whirl- ing up about a dozen high-priced in- dustrials and specialties, _including United States Steel common, Union Carbide, Westinghouse Electric and Bethlehem Steel, to new high records, but other recent favorites lost ground, g‘vlng the market an irregular appear- ce. Despite the fact that the bulk of pro- fessional speculative activity was in the high-priced issues beyond the reach of many small traders, the volume of bus- iness was relatively large. Weekly iron trade reviews continued optimistic. Iron Age reported that “a tapering demand for steel is vet to be reflocted definitely in mill operations, which are still at near capacity rate in most districts,” it points out that ship- ments are cutting heavily into backlogs in some lines. Real Silk Hosiery resumed dividends on the common stock after a lapse of two years, and there were a number of favorable earnings reports. Call money was in plentiful supply and‘the rate dropped from 7 to 6 per cent, the lowest rate since August 14, This had & bullish effect on speculative sentiment. There was no change in other monetary accommodations, The market turned heavy in the last hour, with renewed seliing of the pub- le utility and related issues. General Electric and American Telephone each lost more than 6 points. Powerful bull- ish operations in the motors failed to reverse the trend. General Motors was sent up more than 4 points on sales of more than 100,000 shares and Du Pont, which holds a 20 per cent inter- est in the corporation, rose nearly 8, The close was heavy. The market opened with an impres- sive demonstration of strength today. The first sale of Radio was a block of 15,000 shares at 921, up 2. Commer- cial Solvents ran up 5 points, to 502; Westinghouse Electric, 3, to 250, ‘and Commercial Investment trusts, 11, to 19814, all new high records, Union Pa= cific opened 4% points higher, and initial gains of 1 to 2!; points were recorded by United States Steel com= mon, Atchison, Montgomery-Ward, General Electric, International Har- veivterumgd ®astman Kodak. all Street apparently was please with the announcement that. the mtig of Stock Exchange member borrowin; to listed share values dropped from 9.15 per cent on July 1, to 8.87 per cent on | August 1, when the market value of all | stocks totaled $83,232,792,083. The an- nouncement that total legal reserve life insurance in force in the United States Ead reached the $100,000,000,000 mark several months sooner than expected also had a bullish_eflect on sentiment. Rails came to the fore in the early trading as a result of the unusuaily fay reble July earnings statement vow be- ing published. Baltimore & Ohio, Erie common and Pennsylvania all moved into new high ground for the year. Commercial Solvents quickly extended its gain to 7 points by touching 504 and Eastman Kodak to 43; by touch- ing 2093, both new high records. United Aircraft moved up 3'% points and Radio advanced to 93.
