SIX NEW AR LINES 'NOW UNDER SURVEY Commerce Department Re- ports Aviation Transporta- tion Rapidly Increasing. By the Associated Press. Six new aliways for the rapidly de- veloping aviation transportation lines | over the countrv are being surveyed by the Commerce Department. Experts are mapping routes, selecting landing fields and sites for aero-light beacons for night flying and emergency ]un?lni fields near cities along the Toute. The airways being surveyed extend from Washington to Cleveland, Ohlo; | Brownsville, Tex,, to New Orleans, La.. | Fort Worth, Tex., to Brownsville, Te: | Miami, Fla., to Atlanta, Ga.; Portland, - Oreg, to Fresco, Wash, fn Fresco to Spokane, Wash. 2,000 Miles Under Contrsuction. Approximately 2,000 miles of airways ' under construction are nearing com- ‘pletion, one of which is international. These ‘established routes will soon e: tend from New York City to Montre: Canada; Cleveland to Albany, N. Y.; Kalamazoo, Mich., to Detroit; Bay City, Mich, to Atlanta, Ga.; Chicago to Milwaukee and Green Bay; St. Louis | to Evanston, Ill.; Salt Lake City, Utah, |to Pesco; San Francisco to Seatile; St. ! Louis to Columbus, Ohio, and from Los Angeles to Albuquerque, N. Mex. The Commerce Department reports that already this year more than 8- 000,000 miles have been flown by com- mercial aviators, compared with tl total of about 9,900,000 for the whole of 1928, and about 5,500,000 in 1927, Licenesd Pilots Number 8,569. On August 1 the department reported there were 8,569 licensed pilots in the United States, 70 of them being women. Of the women 7 held transport licenses, the highest granted by the Commerce Department, while 11 held limited com= mercial licenses. The latest information at the de- partment, shows 12,224 privately owned airplanes in use in the D. C. GROUP TO ATTEND BALTIMORE PARLEY Middle Atlantio Young Men and Young Women to Meet September 1. A large delegation from Washington will attend the annual convention of the Middle Atlantic States Federation of Young Men’s and Young Women's As- sociations to be held this year in Balti- more, September 1 and 2, it was made known today. In addition to the 15 official delegates and alternates, repre- senting the local Y. M. H. A. and Y. W. H: A, and the Jewish Community Center, arrangements are being com- pleted to take to Baltimore a number of the members of the constituent organ- izations. Simultaneously with the convention will be held the annual oratorical con- tests of the federation, in which orators from Washington, Baltimore, Norfolk, Richmond and Newport News will com- pete for the Carrie Weinberg Memorial prize.
