12. =R GRAIN FIRMS UNITE AGAINST BIG PoOL Co-operative Body and Pri- vate Concern Are Build- ing Many Elevators. BY JOHN F. SINCLAIR. NEW YORK, August 5. (N. A. N. A. The blg Canadian wheat pool—a co-} operative organization of the Western wheat farmers—seems to be forcing the private grain firms to join hands for their own protection. Recently 30 of the big grain firms on the Winnipeg Grain Exchange have united under one corporate management 1 order to cut the cost of handling grain to the minimum. If the present tendency keeps up, scores of other individual firms will join hands for the seme reason. ‘The Canadian pool, which owns about 1,500 country elevators out of a total of 5.000, is adding or building more of them | at the rate of from 300 to 400 a year. It is the commission firms which merely act as agents in finding buyers for the gramn cars consigned to them who have found the competition of the pool keenest. Private Elevator Building. Naturally, those who control the coun- try elevators control the flow of grain. Private traders, too, are building many elevators this Summer to strengthen their own position. Both the private intcrests end the pool are also concentrating on additional storage facilities at the terminals—Win- nipeg, Fort Wiiliam, Montreal and Vancouver. Naturally, the poor crop prosp?cfl‘l have somewhat dampened the ardor of both groups. But it is the aim of the prol finally to work out a rounded marketing organization. When that is done it will be not only the biggest Canadian factor to be reckoned with, but the greatest world factor as well. Air-Cooled Office Buildings. The hot weather has again brought the attention of the business world to the problem of the air-cooled office building. The best opinion now is that within 5 or 10 years all modern of- fice buildings will have their own ‘weather-making plants. The Milam Building in San Antonio, ‘FINANCIAL. D, C. TRADE IS ERRATIC ON CURB EXCHANGE Utilities Account for Most of Activity—Some Sell- ing Noted. BY HARRY H. BECKER. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 5.—Trading on the Curb Exchange today was in huge volume, with rapid and erratic price changes. The ticker again proved in- adequate to keep up with the business on_the floor. Utilitles as usual accounted for a large part of the activity. While there were many advances and not a few new highs, there was also large realiz- ing, which the market was unable to absorb except at price concessions. Middle West Utilities Sags. On_ the inside of advance were American & Foreign warrants, Asso- clated Gas & Electric, Penn Water & Ppwer and New England Telephone. e reactionary list included Middle West Utilitles, old and new, the latter at a new low since listing and the for- mer down at one time nearly 30 points. Insull Utllity & Investment off over 20 points and declining in sympathy with Middle West Utilities, and Com- monwealth Edison. The loss in the last-named at 385 was 15 points. Sentiment toward the electric lizht and power stocks was as optimistic as ever, but traders thought it was a good time to take'profits. The advences had been spectacular and the money situa- tion inspired caution. Elsewhere in the list the new Procter & Gamble was active a couple of points higher and so was Standard Brands, up fractionally. Speculation was stimulat- ed by the announcement of the entry of the Morgan interests into Procter & Gamble and a suggestion that the com- pany would be absorbed by Standard Brands. Duplicates Best Price. Capital Administration A duplicated its best previous price. It was up 8 only to the large earnings reported for the June quarter. but to the proposal to issue new stock on the basis of one new share for each two shares held. The stock is up 100 per cent since the MONDAY. AUGUST 5, '1929. urchase bonds, which have warrants to the it two stock, have risen in the months over 20 points. Further sensational advances were recorded by Aluminum Co. of America and Aluminum, Ltd. The latter was up almost 40 points at 280 and both issues made new highs. Marconi Inter- national was turned over in large blocks at slowly rising prices. Favorites among ~ the investment trusts were Guardian Investors and Tri-Continental Corporation. CHICAGO, August 5 (#).—Big ar rivals of wheat at Omaha and Chicag: tumbled prices headlong downward early today. with belated rains in Can- ada adding impetus. Receipts of wheat at Omaha today totaled 1,100 cars and in Chicago 876 cars. Opening 1% to 2 cents lower, wheat values afterward showed a decided further drop. Corn and oats were also weak, with corn starting at 5% to 1'; cents off, and subsequextly continuing to fall. Pro- vislons held steady.
