CORNING DISAGREES WITH ARMY SURVEY i Missouri Yet Threatens| Town, Residents Say, De- spite Engineers’ Report. By the Agsociated Press. b CORNING, Mo., July 31.—Mayor G.| N. Sgnultz and other residents yester- | day Zisagreed with the report of Army ! engineers that Corning is in no danger | from encroachment of the Missouri! River, which is gradually shifting its channel toward the southwest edge of | this valley hamlet. 1 Mayor Schultz said there was no “im- metiate danger,” but he felt that the situation was grave and would continue | to urge action by the Government to | protect the town. { Property Owners More Pessimistic. M. A. Rundle, spokesman for a group | of property owners, took & more pessi- mistic view. “We in Corning think the town is in imminent danger,” he said. “We have scen the river cut a mile and a half toward Corning this year and it has only 600 feet to go. Are we going to have to wait until our houses drop into | the river?" Engineers from the Kansas City office | of the Army Engineers’ Corps after a survey reported to the War Department | in Washington today that the town is | in no danger and that it would cpst ! more to turn back the river than | ed farm land is worth. | Theodore Wyman, jr. said| s a possibility that the stream | miy again voluntarily change its course in other direction. | No Local Funds Available. i No _local funds are available to fight the hungry river, town officials said. | Corning has a population of only 300 | When Corning was founded 60 odd ! years ago the strea mwas two miles or | mere to the west of the townsite, flow- | ing virtually down the middle of the | six-mile sweep of bottom land between | the Nebraska and Missouri bluffs. In| the last 10 years the river has been | slowly cutting its bed eastward until today it is about 600 feet from the | southwest corner of the village and 27 | feet from the main highway into town. | Five years ago the Corning levee dis- | trict was formed and $100,000 spent in | an attempt to divert the river. The | currents kept eating away, however, | and swept around the retards. | The Missouri bluffs rise a mile east | of Corning. | Voleanic Eruption Ruins Village.
