ARE FOX AND ZUKOR Both Hungary Natives, Who | Rose to Power With Little Book Education. BY JOHN F. SINCLAIR. NEW YORK, July 27.—In this age of mergers and supermergers two men stand out in the motion picture indus- try as the big executives. Both of them were born in the same country, Hun- gary, at about the same time. Both started early in life working for & living, without much book education, but with determination to succeed. These two men are Adolph Zukor, head of the Paramount organization, ‘Willlam Fox, head of the Fox Film Corporation and its allied corporations ‘William Fox is recuperating from a severe automobile accident. He is not 50 well known to the public as his fel- low countryman. But, professionally, Fox plays & lone hand and is always to be reckoned with. Adolph Zukor is reported to have re- fused $90,000,000 recently for his hold- ings in the Paramount organization. He sees a greater future in the movies than has ever been shown in the past. Zukor is known to be a hard worker, an ex- ecutive who concentrates on his own organization and is popular with his subordinates. He was at his desk in his New York office nearly every day dur-| ing the recent hot spell. Like hi ployes, he takes for his annual vacation Jjust two weeks. Two Big Deals Closed. On his farm just outside of New York last week, while on his vacation, he closed two important deals. One, the taking over of the 150 theaters !in Minnesota, and North and South Dakota, owned by the Finkelstein & Rubin Circuit, for a price supposed to have been about $10,000,000. The other, the purchase of the majority interest in the Saenger Circuit in Louisiana, Texas and Florida, for a rice reported to be in the neighbor- 00d of $14,000,000. Both these men, Fox and Zukor, are in their early fiftles, keep pretty much in the background nally and sur- round themselves with unusually capa- ble executives. And when Fox was reported as dan- gerously hurt in the hospital on Long Island, last week, among the first to call to pay his respects was his friendly but vigorous competitor, Adolph Zukor. It is not often that one sees a foreign car in the United States. How many were imported last year? The United States Government figures on that subject are authoritative. There were 566 brought into the United States last_year., valued at $1,201,000. This would make them worth about $2,000 each. At the present time there is a 25 per cent ad valorem tariff on motor cars. Should this duty be taken off? Obviously there is no danger of for- eimn competition in this field unless large American automobile vonceras, al- ready well equipped with factories aboard, decide to produce cars abroad by cheap labor for the American market and undersell their own auto factories manufacturing in the United States. ‘That is the only objection that has been raised to taking off 25 per cent ad valorum tariff and allowing auto- mobiles to entef the United States, dut; free. And it sounds like a rather weal objection at that. McKenna Business Giant. Probably the United States has no business man whose career parallels that of the Right Hon. Reginald Me- Kenna of England. Mr. McKenna, chairman of the larg- est commercial bank in the world, the Midland, did not begin his life's work as a banker. He was born, 65 years ago, not in the country as so many American busi- ness leaders were, but in the city of London. His father was well-to-do, so he was educated privately for college, then entered Kings College, London, and Cambridge, where In the American sense, he was a pol- itician nearly all his life. As early as 1892 he ran for Parliament as a Liberal, but he was not successful until 1895, when he entered Parliament and stayed there continuously as a member for North Monmc for the next 23 4’ Covering and Weather News Help and retired from Parlfament in 1918 to | | enter the banking field. | While in college he was a member of the rowing crew and the winner of two cups at Henley.
