July 24—1If friends laugh this Summer at the man | who claims the noise of the katydids and the whip-poor-wills on a Summer night In the country keeps him-awake, | e can point to scientfiic sleeping ex- | periments at Colgate University to Pprove that he is not so far from normal. In the Colgate psychological labora- | tory, under direction of Dr. Donald A. | Laird, head of the department, there | is an electrical apparatus which records | the muscular tension of the entire body | without awakening the sleeper. Although this apparatus has not | easured the disturbances that might be caused by katydids and whip-poor- | wills; it has recorded others, ;nmmonpl.ce and even more umnlah-‘ Ing. Variances Shown by Line. The apparatus makes & line on a sheet of paper, swinging upward as re- | laxation increases and downward as | tension sets in toward wakefulness. Sleeping in a 10-room house which 18 used as the Colgate sleep laboratory, | one man's chart at about 1:30 am.| showed an abrupt drop when an auto | truck passed. Although the increase in | tension went & considerable distance | down toward the level of complete | wakefulness, the sleeper did not e his eyes or visibly move. Soon after 2:30, when another <1P9D- er coughed, lhere ‘was another notice- | able downward swing, aithough not as | great. Then about 4:30, when & win- | dow slammed, the automatic pencil de- | scribed a longer drop than even for | the truck. Sleep Not Entirely Broken. 1In mo case, however, did the sleeper | wake up. Throughout the night rhere\ were other smaller drops of which Dr. Laird says: “What caused the other downv\nrd jumps of the curve we do not know, but are conjecturing that it may have | Dbeen dreams. It is possible, of course, that poor sleeping equipment or a room | t00 hot may cause some of them, but, | again, we still have to conjecture. In| two or three years we shall know rather | definitely.” The charts show that there is more relaxation on the average in the first hour than in the succeeding two and a half hours. And then during the last hour of sleep there is an abrupt ten- dency for still more relaxation.
