Complications following an operation a week ago caused the death yesterday afternoon of Dr. Charles Augustus on orthodontia, the science of mechan- tions of the teeth. Dr. Hawley died at Garfield Hospital at 3:30 o'clock. Funeral services will be held Thurs- Church_and burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery. The Masonic order will take part in the rites. Dr. Hawley had made the Capital his home for the past 20 years. Recently he had been living with his family at fllP La Salle Apartments, Connecticut He already had established & wide reputation as an orthodontist when he came to Washington. He was born in Milan. Ohio, and attended the Univer- sity of Michigan, practicing in the West before coming to the Capital. Here his office has been a focal point for specialists in his line and he had been in great demand for professional papers before many notable dental groups throughout this country and abroad. His work won for him the distinc- tion of being elected a fellow of the American College of Dentistry, the highest honor his profession could | bestow. During his residence in the Capital Dr. Hawley had been active in secur- ing more rigid restrictions over the Orthodontist Expires DIES AT AGE OF 57 Retired Naval Officer Was One of Leading Episcopal Laymen in D. C. Comdr. Charles Theodore Jewell, U. S. N, retired, and one of the leading Episcopal laymen of the District, died in Emergency Hospital last night. He was 57 years old. Comdr. Jewell had been in failing | health for about A year but had been ‘\ll serfously only a short while. His parents, Rear Admiral T. F. and Mrs. ,Je‘lrll were with him when he died. Comdr. Jewell, who resided at 2135 R street, was in genenl charge of pub- licity for the Episcopal Church in the District of Columbia for a number of vears and at the time of his death was secretary of the Provincial and Dioce- san Commissions of Religious Education for the church, in addition to serving as a member of the publicity department for the National Council of the Churches. At the last diocesan con- vention he was elected a delegate to the Provincial Synod which is to meet in Harrisburg, Pa., in October. Secretary of Layman's Group. Comdr. Jewell also was secretary of the Layman’s Service Association, of which he was one time president. His | other church activities included serv- ing as supcrintendent of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church Sunday school from 1911 to 1926 and the writing of nu- merous articles on church affairs.
