$2.00, $2.50, $3.00 White PALTRY SUM GIVEN Battle Against Insects. The Los Angeles Times sent John Steven McGroarty to Florida fo make a first-nand investigution of the Medi- terranean Jruit Ay situation which has caused widespread damage to crops and IN WAR ON PESTS " 14 , 2 king U. S. Appropriates Mere |medi worme, 21 bettie groups, together with lice, mites, and Heaven knows $2 m mo to Aid in how many parasites, ,000, causing enorrious losses. And there are many other kinds of “borers.” Also there is the corn ear worm, the Heul:n fly ll’le chlm.h bug and the n_bug grain as it grows, bul. th(s il only w menuou the prin- cipal corn, wheat and other grain and grass pests. Infesting the warehouses are fully 40 specles or groups of insect pests—4 specles of weevil, 2 of grain borers, 7 It's & wonder any of the staff of life gets as far as the consumer, who never thinks where it came from or the bat- tles fought to save it. Leaving the grain pests, the ento- mologists spread out before me the desolate battle flelds of the fruit pests. And, as far as I was concerned myself, they struck home when they did that. length pear tr that were traditionally long- lived. ere were pear trees more than 100 years old in the deserted old mission gardens of the State. The first bearing year we had 40 tons of large, luscious Bartlett pears. The next year the trees showed signs of decay, In another year they were dead. The insects had routed us. Battle More Desperate. It was a tragedy. And I think of how many tragedies there have been since, for the battle grows more des- perate with each passing year. No fruit that grows is immune from danger and attack. ‘There is an lpr‘llln‘ lst of fruit pests, known familiarly to the scient- ists. Crowding the borer for the cham- plonship, the Curculio and the San Jose scale are notable contenders. The ter- rapin scale, squash bugs, blister beetles D. TUESDAY, JULY: 23,192 ‘Turning from things to eat to things to wear, we come upon other vast tribes of insects—moths, weevils, roaches and armies of ‘bugs. The most famous as well as the most Uestructive of this branch of the insect race is the boll weevil, I met & man in Florida who told me he was driven out of Georgia by the boll weevil. Which is to say the insect destroyed his cotton p and thus rulned his business. It causes an aver- age loss of $300,000,000 a year in the cotton industry. ‘The entomologists know all about the boll weevil, except how to get rid of him. And they will yet find out how to do that, I hope. The trouble is that just when they are bent on the study of one fnsect &n epldemic of others breaks out somewhere. Only Few Entomologists. And there are onyy & few entomo'- able to muster have run the life history of the boll weevil to the earth. He is by birth & Mexican, and his folk first emigrated to this country in the year 1892, crossing the Rio Grande near Brownsville, Tex. His tribe rapidly increased. By 1922 they were estab- lished in a stretch of territory 614,213 square miles in extent. ‘The entomologists tell us of an ec- centric astronomer who had a fanciful idea that he could cross the gypsy moth with silkworms. What he had in his head does not seem clear. Anyway, this man caused to be brought from France to Medford, in Massachusetts, egg clusters of the gypsy moth. A few years afterward, in ihe Summer of 1889, the gypsy moth over- Tan the neighborhood, defoliating fruit and shade trees and swarmed into the ! homes of the people. Trees died and property depreciated in value. This destructive caterpillar has since self of the pest after a cam) that spread through many years and called for the expenditure of huge sums of money. The vigil was relaxed. And the gypsy moth came right back. Pesls Dangerous to Man. Not the least to be feared from the insect world are the enemies of man and beast that it produces—mosquitos and fleas that traffic in the spread of | malaria and deadly fevers, causing sick- ness and death; screwworms, ticks and maggots, that afict and kill animals; fleas, roaches and ants make life a misery in many places, And it is appalling to contemplate | how little we are really doing to defend | ourselves against the day of wrath. “The earth and the fullness thereof” stands a chance to take its place among dead proverbs. ‘The States of the Union must cer- tainly give greater attention to the i ranks of the scientific entomologists must be increased and their equipment enlarged as fully as required. Canada. Mexico and Central America should combine in an additional Monroe doc- trine to shut out further establishment of the i ct er-pire.
