S. Issues Fol- low Trend. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, July 23.—There was | much wavering of prices today in the market for convertible bonds. They had periods of weakness and spells of strength and moved as much as 1!, and 2 points between transactions. The vol- ume of trading increased slightly. American I. G. Chemical 525 had a further decline of 3 points to 121, com- pared with 135 yesterday, before they rallied 4 points. Missouri Pacific 5!2s opened 3!, points lower. Atchison 4'2s made an early gain of over a point and later rose 3 points. The two Tele- but higher by one to 2 points. Alle- ghany Corporation 5s and American In- ternational 5!5s each reacted fraction- ally, with some recovery later. The local traction issues made a poor showing, appearing to be suffering from a small, but steady, volume of liquida- tion. Traction bonds outside New York have also been heavy recently. The high-grade mortgage market was dull, with a few strong issues, includ- ing Atchison 4s, Canadian Pacific 4s, Great Northern 7s and San Antonio & Aransas Pass 4s, which rose more than a point. Chicago & Eastern Illi- nois refunding 5s gained & point, as did Seaboard Air Line adjustments, but Frisco & Rock Island 4!3s were down and Seaboard Air Line 6s lost a point. In the industrial group list Interna- tional Paper 6s went below 90 after the recent bidding-up process to 95 in order to sell the Canadian paper_issue. The practice is one that syndicates continually resort to and from which they invariably get the same unfavora- ble reaction. United States Government issues were irregular, with weakness in the Liberty group and some gains in the Treasury issues. Market Re- port Reasonable Prices for Fresh Stocks. Largely increased receipts of home- grown vegetables was an interesting fea- ture of the day’s market. Tomatoes, much higher than usual the past few days, came in such large quantities this morning that prices took an appreciable drop. grly in the morning 2-peck baskets of the vegetable were offered at prices as high as $1.75. Early in the day, however, prices started decreasing and at noon baskets of the best stock were freely offered as low as $1. Dealers predicted that prices probably would go much lower before the close of the day's market and that tomorrow they may be offered as low as 50 cents. Receipts Are Varied. Choice cucumbers from nearby farms were offered as low as $1 a basket, while sugar corn, fresh from the fields, brought around 60 cents a dozen, grow- ers selling them in 5-dozen lots at $3. Other vegetables from nearby farms included potatoes, squash, kale, beets, turnips, carrots and Spring onions. Po- tatoes, mostly from the Eastern Shore of Virginia, sold at $4.75 and $5 a bar- rel, and dealers said they were of ex- ceptionally fine quality. ‘There were few lima beans from nearby, but most of the receipts were from North Carolina and distant Virginia points. They sold from $3 to $4.50 a bushel. Dealers also had plentiful supplies of string beans, peas | and lettuce, mostly from distant points. | Bartlett pears, first of the season, were offered at $5.25 a box, while Malaga grapes, also first of the season, brought $3.25 a box. Both fruits were from California. Heavy shipments of peaches from the South, chiefly North Carolina, were | offered at & wide range of prices this morning. Some of the fruit, off color and showing signs of being wormy, was difficuly to sell at $1 & basket. Choice fruit brought as high as $4. Cheaper prices of Spring chickens, sligntly higher prices of eggs and! cheaper prices of marine products were lincluded in the day's market reports.
