PATH FOR HORSES | PLANNED BY GRANT Suitable Roadway Over New Memorial Bridge Urged for Riders. Provisions for bringing horses over Arlington Memorial Bridge from Fort Myer, Va., as a military measure, as an aid to polo players and to assist riders generally is being given close study by Lieut. Col. U. S. Grant. 3d. executive officer of the Arlington Memorial Bridge Commission. Col. Grant said today he is making inquiries into the best ways to accom- plish_this problem. Arlington Memorial Bridge is located in an odd way, Col. Grant explained, for pracons on the Lincoln Memorial are able ta look down upon the bridge itsclf, one of the rare instances in which this can be done. Consequently. any treat- ment in the shape of a proposed bridle path would have to match up with any treatment on the other side, and ft would obriously be inartistic to have a flat bridle path traversing tne center of the bridge, Col. Grant explained. 1 | THE EVENING., STAR, WASHINGTON, D. About a year and a half ago a former Secretary of War, Dwight F. Davis, urged that a matter of miliia*y ne- cossity provision should be made for bringing horses across the new bridge to and from Fort Myer. Col. Grant said that there are numerous occasions on which the Cavalry troops from the Vir- ginia post are brought to Washington for important functions. The horses crossing the Highway Bridge and the Key Bridge have been distressed and sometimes injured, as the crossing there = considefed harmful to the animals’ feet. How to get a suitable footing for the horses across Arlington Memorial Bridge and at the same time preserve the artistic beauty of the bridge itself is one of the major problems in con- junction with the construction cf the completed spar. This matter will have to be disposed of when the bridge is finally paved. but this operation will not take place for some time yet, Ccl. Grant seid. This span it now under constructicn. Col. Grant said that there is a decided advantage in being able to have the horses come over the new vridge and be distributed along the ilready existing bridle paths to the Yenter or northwest section of the city.
