Manufacture of 2,000,000 gallons of medicinal whisky—virtually the first to be made under Government authority since prohibition—will be authorized in | the next few months to replenish the | depleted stocks of the country, it was | announced by Dr. James M. Doran, | commissioner of prohibition, in a statement made public today. ‘While the specific distilleries which will turn out the new supply have not been designated, Dr. Doran said they very likely would be in Maryland, ; Pennsylvania and Kentucky. Rye | whisky will be made in Maryland and Pennsylvania and Burbon whisky in | Kentucky. Six permits will be issued. | Out of more than 300 whisky dlsflhl leries which were in operation at the time the prohibition law took effect Dr. Doran said that only about 10 plants | stiil have kept their distilling apparatus | intact. The others have been dis- mantled. Present Stock Good for Five Years. ‘The present stock of whisky -is now down to about five years' supply, scat- | tered in 25 United States bonded ware- | houses over the country, and the Gov- i ernment has decided it now is time to | authorize manufacture of a new supply {50 it may be aged. | The distillers to whom permits will be issued will be selected soon, Dr. Doran indicated. from among those who apply for permits. | _ Manufacture of new whisky will be | allowed. Dr. Doran pointed out in a| | comprehensive statement, the ! Willis-Campbell act. | Supplements Volstead Act. | This act is supplemental to the na- | tional prohibition act—or the Volstead | act. | " "The actual manufacture, Dr. Doran | said, probably could not get underway | untii late this Fall, cr nearly January 1, 1930. This is due, he said, to the | necessary reconditioning of some of the aistilling units. | While #t has been decided to turn out 2,000,000 galicns in the next permit year, Dr. Doran said that the amount | 1o be manufactured during the succeed- | ing fiscal year would depend upcn the | amount of whisky on hand when time | came 1o issue new permits, . Four Years Ageing Is Required. Pointing out that it is necessary to age whisky four years before it is fit for medicinal purpcses, Dr. Doran esti- mated that by January 1, 1930, there | would be on hand only five years’ supply to meet the needs of the coun- try, and, therefore, the Government should proceed to authorize manufac- ture, to keep a balance of one extra year's supply on hand. Commissioner Doran said the Na- tion's Government-guarded supply of medicinal whisky had dwindled since distilling was halted under the eight- eenth amendment to 9,549,071 gallons. About 1,500,000 gallons are with- drawn from this stock each year and, | taking probable evaporation into con-| sideration, the total is considered suffi- | cient to meet legal requirements for only five years. The commissioner regards recent | suggestions that large amounts of the | ! present supply are of questionable qual- | ity as having little foundation.
