Simpson was taken into custody by fourth precinct police in a raid on a house in the 300 block C street south- west. because it was thought that he was John Simmons, wanted for firing upon Policeman George W. Embrey with a shotgun on the night of March 18, 1928. Fourteen shots took effect in Embrey's head. but he recovered. Stmpson’s description closely answered the description of Simmons, even to several scars upon his face, but he proved his innocence and was released. Several persons acquainted with Sim- mons also told police that Simpson was not the man wanted in the shooting. but agreed that there was a close resem- blance between the two. CANAL PLANES URGED. BALBOA, Canal Zone, July 22 (#).— Increase in air defenses of the Panama Canal was advocted by Representative W.
