As work forges ahead on the Navy's two new dirigibles under construction at Akron, Ohio, naval radio experts are applying themselves to the develop- ments of the radio equipment for the airliners with the objective of havinz them the finest equipped mobile radio stations in existence. From the new adolenscent Navy dir- igible Los Angeles, experiments are be- ing conducted with a view of attaining maximum efficiency for the sets to be installed on the new dirigibles. Last October, just after the German dir- igible Graf Zeppelin made her flight to the United States, the Navy designated the Los Augeles for experimental work in radio. Specifications and detalls of the new equipment for the dirigibles now under construction are withheld. Under naval regulations information regarding tech- nical developments in aeronautics and radio is kept confidential for two years because of the element of competitio: with foreign nations. The Los Angeles, however, already is being re-equipped with radio apparatus of the type pro- guled to be employed on the ZR-4 and ‘The Navy hopes to develop apparatus for the dirigibles with a communication range equal to thelr cruising radius, so 23 o assure direct communication Wit the home station at all times during flight. Since the cruising radius will be of about 10,000 miles, this means that intermediate and high frequency equip- ment with sufficlent power to transmit this distance with good signal strength must be developed. Particular attention is being devoted to the shielding of the engines on tI new craft to prevent magnetism, which is so detrimental to reception. ‘The dirigibles will carry eight high-powered engines, whereas the Los Angeles car- ries only five. Conssquently more effi- clent shielding of spark plugs and igni- tion systems to eliminate these inter- ferences must be developed.
