12 BIRTH RATE DROS AS DEATHS AN D. C. and Nation Similarly __Reported in Census Sur- vey for Last Year. ;The birth rate is falling off while f#he death rate is increasing in the Dis- 1 of Columbia, and the entire United PBtates as well, according to a survey f the Bureau of Census. Deaths in the District of Columbia r the year 1928 were 7,239, as against irths of 8,819 for the same year, but e birth rate Yer 1,009 population for e District fell from 16.7 for 1927 to 6.0 for 1928. £ This shows the District of Columbia with a considerably lower birth rate than the average for the entire regis- fration area, which included all States €xcept Massachusetts and Utah, the birth rate for the area in 1928 stand- .\g_nt 19.7, as compared with 20.7 for 9! Z The death rate of the District of Columbia increased from 12.9 per 1,000 pulation in 1927 to 13.1 in 1928, hile the death rate for the entire fegistration area during the same riod also rose from 11.4 to 12.3 per 000 population. ‘The infant mortality rate- was shown fo be on the decrease in the District of Columbia, as contrasted for an in- in the registration area as a . This rate fell off from 67.6 per 1,000 in 1927 to 66.1 in 1928 for the District of Columbia, while the regis- tration area of the country, on the other hand, showed an increase in this rate from 64.6 for 1927, to 68.0 for 1928. ‘Thus it is seen that while the general death rate for this city was higher than that for the entire country, the infant mortality rate was lower than that for the registration area, giving this city a rating of better than the average on that score. In 33 of the States for which figures for the two years are shown the birth rates were lower in 1928 than in 1927. ‘The highest birth rate in 1928 (27.5 per 1,000 population) is shown for North Carolina and the lowest (14.4) is for Washington. ‘The highest death rate, 14.5 each per 1,000 population, is shown for California and Mississippi, and the lowest rate, 7.4, is for Idaho.
