Mr. Elvey, who has made more films than any other British director, was originally a stage producer and now that the talkie has arrived he wants to produce stage plays again, presenting them in the theater first and filming them afterward. He insists, however, that when a play is turned into a talkie it must first be reduced to film form, and that the dialogue must be fitted in to suit the picture. Mr. Elvey recalls the time when there were no film captions, but when men stood at the side of the screcn and ex- plained the emotions of the heroine. “When captlons first came,” he sald, “they were worded in the third person. | Then we discovered that the public ! was ready to accept words on the i screen as coming from the mouths of the characters, and now here we are ! with our shadows actually talking.” } Among the important films produced % by the Gaumont British Co. during|% | the last few years are “Hindle Wakes,” | with Estelle Brody, John Stuart and | Norman McKinnell: “Roses of Picardy,” | with Jameson Thomas, John Stuart iand Lilian Hall-Davies; “Palais de ;Dunse." with Mabel Poulton; *“Mad- | emoiselle From Armentieres,” “Sailors | Don’t Care” and “Smashing Through.” i The stars in “High Treason” are n | Jameson Thomas, Benita Hume and For Greater Distance and Durability Use Bee-Line Golf Balls Cannon Brand 18x36 Inches oty 29¢ Soft snowy-white towels made of good weight absorbent ma- terial by the world's largest towel manu- facturers. $1.25 Pinaud’s Lilac Vegetal 89c 60c Pompeian Massage Cream 38¢ 65¢ .]ar Pond’s Cold S s | Sewonet & #1 Size Squibbs Mineral 0il 69c 50¢ Stuart’s Dyspepsig Tablets 39 $1 Tyree’s Antiseptic Powder No need to pay more for a first-class golf ball.
