12 - ##s PRICE OF GAS STOCK HOLDS FIRM AT 125 Recent Bids Have Failed to Bring Out Many Shares on Local Exchange. BY EDWARD C. STONE. ‘The asked price for Washington Gas Light stock on the local stock exchange remains at 126, with 125 bid. This is a very strong figure and shows that holders consider the stock good to keep unless they can get a price for it above the all- time high mark of 126%. According to the report made to the Public Utilities Commission, the New York interests now claim to have 110000 shares leaving 20.000 shares outstanding. Most of this stock is_presumed to be § held locally, al- P though a 1arge james L. number of the 3 minority holders turned in their stock at $125 per share, accepting the offer of the new controlling interests. Election of Fred S. Burroughs, repre- senting Harris, Forbes & Co., to the board gives the New York interests three men on the board and leaves three local men on the board. The other two representatives of outside holdings are D. A. Pearson, who engi- neered the long fight for the purchase of the controlling interest, and Wilton J. Lambert, of this city, the attorney who acted as Mr. Pearson's counsel. There is one vacancy on the board. caused by the sale of his holdings by ‘William King. the prominent Washing- ton coal dealer, who resides in George- Sherwood. town. It is believed in the local financial district that Harris. Forbes & Co., New York investment bankers, have a great- er interest in the company and will take more interest in future develop- ments than any of the other Gotham firms now carrying some of the stock. The company is alrcady favorably known here, having underwritten im- portant issues of local gas bonds and in that way becoming familiar with public utility conditions in Washington. Lloyd Smith, president of Harris, Forbes & Co., stands high among New York financiers and has made a bril- liant record in Wall Street. Sherwood Again Heads Association. At the annual meeting of the North- east Building Association, held yester- day. James L. Sherwood was elected president for the fourteenth consecu- tive term. The following officers were re-elected: John L. Knopp, first vice president; Henry C. Althoff, second vice president: Schuyler S. Symons, secretary; Julian F. Belfield, assistant secretary: Frank M. Hatley, treasurer; James E. Payne, assistant treasurer, and Willlam S. Torbert, counsel. The ofiicers and the follwing con- stitute the board of directors: L. L. Anderson, R. John Bochs, N, T. Cha- conas, Allen E. Cowles, J. D. Donovan, J. E. Donovan, W. J. Dow, A. L. Foster, Alfred Jeffery, J. A. Openshaw, John B. Rubino, James L. Sherwood, jr.; Roy L. Swenson, N, J. Ward and ‘Thomas P. Hickman. Mr. Sherwood, the president, is wide- 1y known in the section of Washington in which the association is located. He is manager of the Brookland branch of the Merchants Bank & Trust Co., a position which he has held for many years. The last report of the building association showed assets of $571,802.23. It was organized in 1916. Branch Bank Nearing Completion. George L. Starkey, president of the National Bank of Washington, an- nounces that rapid progress is being made on the new Southwest Branch building which has been under erection for several weeks. The building will be given the finishing touches during Au- gust and be opened for business around September 5. The exterior of the struc- ture is of attractive design, and the in- terior will be equipped with the most modern equipment. The steady increase in business along the water front is expected to insure the new bank of steady business growth. The branch is | near the property of the Pennsylvania | railroad on which an outlay of several million dollars is being made in improv- ing facilities for handling freight, es- pecially perishable goods. Ohrstrom Office Opened Here. G. L. Ohrstrom & Co., one of the! largest public utility investment houses in the country, with offices at 44 Wall street, New York, is opening a Wash- ington office located in Southern Build- ing. Everard J. Carver, formerly asso- clated with the Century Trust Co. of Baltimore, and with G. E. Barrett & Co. of New York, is manager of the local office. Financial District Notes. ‘The National Metropolitan Bank en- tertained its employes last evening at the bank with motion pictures taken at the recent week end picnic at Piney Point. The movies came out splendidly and aroused great enthusiasm. Brokers’ loans increased $58,000,000 during past wesk to $5.813,000,000, new high record; reserve system ratio, 73.8 ~per cent, against 73 per cent last week and 67.9 per cent a year ago; New York, 65.5 per cent, against 68.7 per cent and 63.1 per cent, respectively; an announcement on 5 per cent New York bank rate. Hornblower & Weeks, in their July investment review predict a continu- ation of the recent rise in the stock market, with no immediate pronounced price trend in try bond market. The review calls attention to the fact that in 23 trading days encad July 8 ad- vances were registered in the Dow Jones industrial averages on all but two days. July 19.—Industrial workers today have 5 per cent more money to spend than they had a yeas ago, according to conservative esti- mates made in reports received from most sections of the country. The farmers are in a strikingly betfer posi- tion than they were a month ago. ‘Wheat is up, and this not only affects the future prespect of the growers as to this year's crop and regulates the amount now being received from 1929 grain being harvested, but it makes a big difference in the value of the large stocks in storage left over from 1928. Live stock is firm, corn prospects are *|fair and the total yield from cotton may prove satisfactory. The fruit growers are not in as good case and some of the industrial workers also are out of luck. The situation of the Southeastern fruit growers is reflected in the numer- ous failures of Florida banks during the week. This has had its reflection in Northern communities, since tourists have kept open the financial channels between the North and Florida. The position of Northern banks has not been endangered in the slightest, but the failures have created a huge amount of extra bookkeeping as checks on the 4| closed banks come back.
