Declare That Many Soldiers Will Desert; Brand Seizure of Railroad as Brigandage The Chinese workers in America, through their organ- izations in the food workers and other industries, especially in New York City, yesterday expressed their utter contempt and hatred for the war lords of China, who have reared a throne on the corpses of thousands of beheaded Chinese workers, and who now seek to use the working class of China as cannon fodder in an attack on the Soviet Union. “The soldiers should desert the militarists’ armiesé say the Chinese workers here, and call on all workers , verywhere to support the Socialist Fatherland of all labor. ‘*‘he state- ment is as follows: . . * DENOUNCE CHIANG KAT-SHEK TERROR. “Speaking in the name of the Alliance for Support of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolution, we, Chinese workers and students in the United States, declare our de- termined opposition to the bandit government of Chiang Kai-shek, the base hireling of imperialism. The calumnies and provocations against the Soviet Union, the brigand act in seizing the Chinese Eastern Railway, the arrests, impris- onment and deportations of Soviet citizens who were carry- ing out the joint treaty of 1924 regarding the Chinese East- ‘ ern Line, are a part of the general drive of American and world imperialism against the Soviet Union. “NOT THE WORKERS’ GOVERNMENT.” “The Nanking government of Chiang Kai-shek does not represent the Chinese people, who know that in their hour of need, when they were beset by the armed hordes of the imperialist powers, the one government on earth that stood by us was the government of the ‘Upion of Socialist Soviet Republics. “The fact that Chiang Kai-shek and his crooked, grasp- | ing gang of adventurers that he calls a government have sold out tothe imperialists dees not bind the vee Woes to support such a policy. The statement points out that it is not just the two mili- tarist butchers of the Chinese workers, who now engage in the most insolent provocation against the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics, but that they are the tools of world imper- jalism, maneuvering on the plains of Manchuria against the lof exploitation, fighting the first battle of a new war through | [ forex enemy of imperialism and the whole capitalist system ‘mercenaries. By that re- jection the imperialist powers proved that their professions of peace are hypocritical. While taiking about world peace, they continue strengthening their armed forces for world war. The Kellogg pact concected at Paris last September was an attempt to counteract the disarmament proposals of the Soviet Union and to place the United States government at the head of world reaction. The nations that formulated the articles of the Kellogg pact are precisely the ones that are at this moment backing the attack against the Soviet Union in Manchuria. Under the banner of the Kellogg pact the im- perialists of the world are waging a united struggle against the Soviet Union. This fierce struggle is being waged because of the | mighty growth of the forces of production within the Soviet Union. The building of socialism in the Soviet Union, the victorious march of the socialist forces over the capitalist forces in the land of the former czars, the undermining of the capitalist elements in the cities and villages of the Soviet Union destroys all hope of undermining and destroying the Soviet Union from within. The assured success of the Five- Year Plan of Industrialization, that will make the Soviet power independent of the capitalist powers, goads the im- perialist plunderers to unrestrained fury. The contradictions within the frame-work of capitalism itself, the sharpening contradictions throughout the whole world, the growing | precariousness of capitalist stabilization, the tremendous and ever-growing disproportion between productive capacity and the market, impels the imperialists to strive to cut through those contradictions with fire and sword. The American let Union is the result of | imperialist power, with billions at stake and facing more difficult problems is deeply involved in the conspiracy. The war preparations, the cruiser program, the ambi- tious ventures in aircraft, the strengthening of the army, the war-games being staged for propaganda purposes as well as experimental drills to test the efficiency of the armed forces, are proof of the duplicity in which the Kellogg pact was conceived. The fight in defense of the Soviet Union here in the United States means a direct struggle against the ruling class, the Wall Street brigands who stand behind the Chinese bandit government. We must wage a determined struggle against the war danger and must perfect organizations of workers that can deliver heavy blows against the war- mongers. We must organize the workers in the war indus- tries, fight against rationalization of industry, against con- scription of labor, against every manifestation of imperialist war preparations. But today there is one task that over- shadows all others. That is the fight in defense of the workers’ and peasants’ government of the Soviet Union! Un- less the imperialist conspiracies against the Union of So- cialist Soviet Republics are defeated the working class of the world will face the blackest reaction known in all history. Several hundred _ active dvessmakers, gathering in Webster Hall, 119 E. 11th St., last night, at the call of the Needle Trades Workers Industrial Union, decided to organize at once a vigorous or- ganization campaign throughout the entire industry. The organization drive of the |dressmakers comes in the shadow 2 (New York) calling for all revolutionary workers to down tools | of the shameless fake agreement foisted upon the thousands of ex- | ploited cloak workers by the “so- cialist” officialdom of the Interna- | tional Ladies Garment Workers Company Union. Threatens Dressmakers. “There is no cause for discourage- ment about the cloak situation,” de- clared Rose Wertis, Industrial Union leader. “Already the workers are realizing how great the betrayal is. The industry is demoralized and will become more so, and sooner or later the cloakmakers will be out fighting | again, this time under the leader- ship of the Industrial Union. “Now the company union is turn- ing to the dressmakers and Schlesin- ger has announced that he wants (Continued on Page Two) No one who has crossed the borders of the Soviet Union and gone into capitalist countries seething with armed mer- cenaries in the service of imperialism can fail to appreciate the spirit of sacrifice that pervades the soldiers of the Red Army and the G. P. U. (State Political Administration) who are stationed on the frontiers. In case of a border attack by the imperialist agents these defenders of the revolution are the first to fall. Thousands of these Red Soldiers have died at the hands of alleged ban- dit gangs, who were in reality imperialist murderers. Young, defiant, determined, these men are the very embodiment of the revolution. Today they stand at the Manchurian border ready to sac- rifice their lives that the Soviet Union, the outpost of the world revolution, may live. These Red Army men never whimper, never complain about being called upon to make sacrifices. They are ready at any time to sacrifice their all. ’ How pitifully small is the sacrifice demanded of Party members in the United States, in comparison with the sacri- fices of these soldiers of the revolution! Yet, there are those who call themselves revolutionists who, even today when war is being waged against the Soviet Union, who refuse tc even meet the One Day’s Wage assessment to enable the Party and the Daily Worker fulfill their revolutionary duty to the proletariat of the United States and the world. If the Red Army soldiers can sacrifice their very lives surely you. can sacrifice. The suspension of the Daily Worker in the United States at this time would be a blow to the defense of the Soviet Union. C., July 18.—In a last minute attempt to avoid the unfavorable publicity resulting from basing their case for the electrocu- tion of 15 workers so much on the perjured affidavits of Gunman Roach and Policeman Gilbert, and to prepare a more complete and more skillful frame-up of the de- fendants, the mill owners who run the state of North Carolina, have permitted the indictment by the Mecklinburg grand jury of Roach jand Gilbert for assault with intent |to kill, and have had the trial judge changed. Judge Hoyle Sink, who is openly and notoriously a company judge, was substituted for, in a gubernatorial order today, by Judge Barnhill, | Mill Press Prophesied Move. The Gastonia Gazette published in a recent issue a surprising admis- | | | sion, totally different from its previ- | ous propaganda, admitting that the sort of publicity the North Carolina mill section was getting out of the Gastonia case was detrimental to it, and that workers were beginning to believe that conditions in all the mills were as bad as those in the Loray mill.
