D. C. Naval Reserve The 1st Division of the United States Naval Reserve Battalion of the District of Columbia, commanded by Lieut. Harold E. Richardson, left here yesterday aboard the U. 8. destroyer Abel P. Upshur, training ship of the local battalion, for two weeks of training at sea, during which the vessel will be attached to one of the squadrons of the Atlantic Scouting Fleet, operating off_the coast of New England. During this pel'lod the officers and men will receive' training in emergency ship drills, day and night maneuvers with the other destroyers and will con- clude the exercises in the second week ‘with target piactice. The vessel steamed down the Potomac and up the coast and is due to arrive at Newport, R. I, shortly before dark and Tuesday night the exercises with the rest of the fleet will begin at sea. The vessel is in command of Lieut. Comdr. R. 8. Field, Regular Navy, who several weeks ago relieved Comdr. Mark L. Hersey. Two Regular Engineer offi- cers will be in charge of the engine and fire rooms during a part of the cruise. Lieut. E. J. Dayton reported last week for duty aboard the Upshur to relieve Lieut. M. C. Hutchinson, jr., whohasbeen here about two years. However, it was said that Lieut. Hutchinson will remain with the vessel for 10 days and will be detached at Newport, R. I, and then will proceed to the West Coast to join the airplane carrier Saratoga, to which he will be attached. In addition to the locall division the 1st Division of the Baltimore, M | Battalion is aboard the vessel for trai THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D." O, M. Fewell, Lieut. (Junior Grade) Bev- erly M. The schedule of the cruise provides for the Upshur to put into Vineyard Haven, Mass., next Saturday and Sunday for llbeny for the officers and men. ‘The small place was selected, it was sald, because of the fact that the men seem to have a better time ashore T there than if they were sent to & large town, Upon the return of the vessel to the ‘Washington Navy Yard two weeks hence it will remain in port one week to re- g’ ish its stores when the 2d Fleet vision will go over the same route for its peflod of "training, to_be_follow: lllnn ‘weeks later by the 3d Fleet Di- vl Having lueooumny passed his ex- aminations, Ensign Edwin M.
