CHENISTRY HELPS 1. HOME OWNER Research Work Results Are; Known but Little by Average Citizen. BY H. E. HOWE, American Chemical Soclety. Chemieal research upon materials | and ways to make them better suited | to home needs has alredy resulted in a long list of accomplishments which place the home manager under reel obligation to the science of chemistry. As in other fields, the result of the chemist’s work is seldom appreciated as such, for it,does not enter the home with the labe¢l “made by the aid of chemistry.” In these days of color the chemist has made available a wide range of choice in the enamels present in bath- room and kitchen, in decoration of walls and furniture and in.the dye- | stufts for draperies and wearing ap- | rel. There is always the problem of how to make tRese colors more endur- ing, easier of application and subject to cleansing without fading and re- habilitation with the greatest ease. | Recent accomplishments in adapting the type of lacquers used on automo- biles to application by amateurs on household furniture is indicative of type of service. ‘Water Softening.
