An investigation of the aviation schools in the United States is being made by the Comaerce Department in an effort to reduce the number of air fatalities Maj. Clarencc M. “Young, director of aeronautics of the department, expects the investigation to reluce greatly if it does not eradicate the “ten-hour fly-by- night schools” by making it possible to single out and list schools worthy of an approved rating. “In this way,” he explains, “it will be known which schools are approved and the ones that are not, and any one who really wants to learn to fly naturally would attend an approved institution. “The students of thest schools would receive better instruction than the ones of the non-approved institutions, and, of course, would be better qualified to fly. This should result ‘n holding to a minimum the number of fatalities.” Department figures show 222 fatali- ties from commercial flying during the last six months of 1928, compared with 1€ in the first six months. In the full year, fiying of commerciai planes in- creased approximately 1,000 per cent. “The increase in the number of deaths,” Maj. Young declared, “was far | less than the increase in the amount of | ying.” Of those killed during the first six months, 69 were pilots and 93 pas- sengers. Cot- ton, the new Undersecretary of State, has been introducing his corncob pipe into the depart- ment. Mr. Cotton claims to be as much an expert on corncob pipes as Mr. Dawes does on the under- slung variety. He keeps a box in reserve in his office to guard against the ibility of running short if he forgetfully leaves one or two scattered in other offices during the day, and his secretary has standing instructions to have a supply of a popular brand of tobacco always on hand. ‘Thus far, he has always re- membered to lay his corncob aside when called to the office of Sec- retary Stimson.
