LONDON, June 28.—The final royal | court of the season was held last night in a blaze of crimson and golden splen- dor at Buckingham Palace. Once again there were Americar young women to make the bow to Queen Mary and again the new American Ampassador, Gen Charles G. Dawes, appeared in simple American evening dress in preference to | the silk breeches df court etiquette. It had been explained today at the | ©office of the lord chamberlain that the Ambassador had obtained special dis- pensation to wear trousers, although his staff for the most part followed the reg- ulation costume. At least one London paper argued that in doing this he ap- peared at court in the uniform of his | rank as an American Ambassador and | in such dress as he would wear in com- ing before his own President. Eight American women were received. They were the Misses Annie E. Nourse of Boston, Mary E. Riddle of Tennessee, Elizabeth ' Stuart of Cambridge, Mass., and Mistresses Ernest Dorbritz of Phil- adelphia, Walter Mangum of Soutn Charolina, Francis Neilson of Chicago, John B. Seymcur of Georgia and An- | drew Wheeler of Philadelphia. Her majesty wore a Russian-shaped coronet ablaze with diamonds, while on | her breast flashed the great Kohinoor. The blue ribbon of the Order of the Garter was her only decoration. The Duke of York tock the place of his elder brother tonight in escorting his mother from the drawing room to the ballroom. Behind the queen and grouped around the single golden throne stood the Duke and Prince George, both in naval uni- New Name Is Added To Poker as Three Fives Receive Name A new term has been added to the colorful vocabulary of poker, according to devotees of the game in downtown newspaper circles. A player will say: “I've got a ‘Washington Monument.” This means he has three fives. ‘The Washington Monument is 655 feet high. SHERIFFS ARREST PLANNED I WEEK Thomas W. Cunningham to Be Taken in Custody Under Supreme Court Order. David S. Barry, sergeant-at-arms of the Senate, is preparing to carry out next week the mandate of the Supreme Court ordering the arrest of Sheriff Thomas W. Cunningham of Philadel- phia in connection with the Senate in- vestigation of the election of William S. Vare of Pennsylvania. The mandate was mailed yesterday to the clerk of the Federal District Court at Phila- delphia. Under a Senate resolution, introduced by Senator King, Democrat, Utah, the sergeant-at-arms will be authorized to release Cunningham under bond of $1.- 000 for his appearance before the Sen- ate when wanted. During_ the investigation of the elec- tion of Vare as United States Senator, Cuningham twice appeared as a witness before the Senate committee and testi- fled he had contributed $50,000 to the State Republican organization for cam- paign purposes. The jewelry stolen included & $25,000 pearl necklace. ‘The theft, Mr. Whitehouse said, was committed some time between 8:30 and 10:30 the night before while he and Mrs. Whitehouse were attending a din- ner at the home of Ogden Mills. Seven servants left in the house were ques- tioned by Nassau County police.
