DR SHELDONTELLS FLECTRON THEDRY Explains Idea of British Physicist Which Would Wipe Out Smallest Unit. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 12—The electron the theoretical smallest unit of matter, is in danger of being wiped out by a remarkable mathematical analysis by Dr. A. S. Eddington of the University of Cambridge. His work is explained by Dr. H. H. Sheldon, head of the department of physics, New York University, who says: “Electrons are believed to be the ulti- mate particles of matter, atoms being composed of electrons which are nega- tive charges of electricity combined with protons, which are positive charges. Some of the electrons revolve around the proton and are responsible for the chem- ical properties of the atom. “Charge” Most Fundamental. *“The amount of electricity in an elec- tron or, as it is termed, the ‘charge’ on the electron, thus is one of the most fundamental constants in nature. This charge has deen determined experimen- tally, its determination being one of the most notable achievements of the work of Dr. Robert Milllkan of Pasadena, Calif,, who received the Nobel Prize for ; this work “Now Dr. A. S. Eddington, one of the world’s foremost mathematicians, suggests that the electron may not have any real existence at all and that its so-called ‘charge’ can be calculated from purely geometrical considera- tions. He points out that we know nothing about an isolated electronic charge and that in all cases where measurement can be made two elec- trons are repelling each other. Suggests Meeting Point. “He suggests that the possibility of & point in space where two electrons meet would correspond to the possible arrangements of 16 rows of 16 columns. Since there are 136 possible arrange- ments for this geometrical system, he suggests that the number representing the possibility of two electrons meet~ ing should be 136; its experimental value from the measurements made by Dr. Millikan is slightly higher than this. “The physicists will now redetermine the charge on the electron by all pos- sible methods in order to see whether Eddington's value of ‘136 can be con- firmed. It it is, we probably shall have to revise our old notions of the struc- ture of matter and possibly abandon the idea of any physical existence of the electron. All matter, in fact, will become again merely a mode of thought.” STAYS UNTIL JULY 1. Mrs. Willebrandt to Remain to Handle Administrative Matters. Attorney General Mitchell yesterday was advised that Mrs. Mabel Walker Willebrandt, assistant in charge of pro- hibition enforcement, will remain at the department until July 1 to handle ad- ministretive matters with which she is especially familiar. Her resignation, which President Hoover has accepted, takes effect June 15. No information was forthcoming at the department regarding her successor.
