Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 12.—“Smoke and grow thin,” say the tobacco interests. “Abstain and grow fat,” thunders Sena- tor Reed Smoot, and at least the hum- ble and remofe Utah sugar beet gets into the high-toned, multi-millionaire dollar advertising row which is leaving multitudes of suggestible citizens un- decided whether to feel like a gumdrop and reach for a smoke, or feel like a smoke and reach for a gumdrop. They are caught between ¥wo Here among the high commands of the candy and tobacco armies, the ar- riving sugar beet is accepted as an intervenor in the controversy long over- due. While Senator Smoot had nothing at zl to say about sugar beets, rising fend tge women and children of the insidious poison of the tobacco advertising, he has long been the Sir Galahad of the sugar beet. His blade and been unsheathed against whomever and whatever bode it harm—tariff deflation, growers’ as- soclations, drought, dry rot, Russian thistle or ecinch bugs. And now he| has leaped to defend the women and children it nourishes against the dev- astating cigaret! In the words spof the old song, “It’s a roundabout way'to get at it,” but both candy kings and wmeo barons are frank in viewing beets as the object of Senator Smoot’s solicitude. STOCKS ARE FIRM IN QUIET TRADING Buying Support Appears as Mid-Month Credit Strain Is Minimized. BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL, Associated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, June 12.—quiet strength characterized today's stock market. Prices slipped off moderately in the early trading in sympathy with the de- cline in wheat futures, but, fresh buying support quickly appeared, and the market rallied again under the leader- ship of the alcohol, public utility and railroad equipment issues. Trading con- tinued extremely dull due to the absence 1 of public participation and the restricted actlivities of professional traders. Call money renewed unchanged at 8 per cent with a small volume of offer- ings reported available in the “outside market” as low as 7'2. Indications of a gradual easing of the general credit situation, and the likelihood that the mid-month stringency will not be as bad as previously expected, have helped to revive bullish confidence in the market. Except in a few public utili- ties and specialties, show little inclina- tion -to resume operations, however, until after the June credit strain is over, Public utility and several high priced shares moved up during the last hour in contrast with the liquidation in other sections of the list. Auburn Auto rose 15 points to a new high, while Midland Steel Products preferred gained 12, Al- lis-Chalmers and American Water Works & Electric 8 each. On the other hand, Universal Leaf Tobacco lost 7', points to 71, and National Bellas H&ss 2% to 48, both new lows for the year. Allied Chemical was down 4 points, while Commercial Solvents was off 10 points. New York Central and South- ern Pacific sagged substantially, The close was irregular, Opening Is Higher. The market opened sharply higher under leadership of a number of re- cent bull favorites. American Water ‘Works mounted 1%, points and Air Re- duction % of a point to new record prices. Sparks Withington (old stock) Jumped 5 points and Warner Bros. add- ed 2% points to yesterday’s gain of 11. Greene Cananea, Westinghouse Electric and Mouon Picture climbed 1% to 1% poin Wlth the mid-month credit stringen- cy likely to be less severe than previ- ouslv expected and “bear” traders ap- parently unable to dislodge any large volume of investment holdings, oper- ators for the advance resumed opera- tions on a fairly broad scale in the early part of today’s market. There was some profit-taking in some of the recently strong specialties, particularly American Can and Fleischman, lnd renewed selling pressure against a recent weak spots, particularly Nl‘h Motors, but offerings generally were well absorbed. Public utilities were again in brisk demand despite recent warnings that some issues in that group had over-dis- counted the normal growth of the in- dustry. Commonwealth Power quickly ran up 4! points and American Water Works and Federal Light and Traction moved into new high ground at 128 and 106, respectively. New High Recorded. Auburn Auto jumped 5% points to a new high at 257}, National Distillers Products preferred .advanced 5 poln to a new peak, at 97, and Crucible and Youngstown Sheet & Tube registered new highs on early gains of about a point_each. A. M. Byers, Yellow Truck, Erie first preferred, New Haven, General Asphalt, Electric Auto Lite, Coca Cola and Gen- eral Electric also pointed upward in the early trading. Foreign exchnngu opened steady, with swflmfi’eclble& still quoted at 4.834 13-16, lowest level since last February. : Wall Street Briefs By the Associated Press. | Financing for Home and Foreign Se- j curities Corporation, underwrit , holding company formed by the Wul Street house of Arthur S.
