Sunds Chinese Property Owners Are Taxed To Pay War Costs By the Assoclated Pre CANTON, China, June 3.—The government has attempted to place the expense of the pres- ent war between Kwangtung and Kwangsi provinces directly on the people by ordering property owners to pay a special military tax equivalent to one month's rentals. Central bank notes may be used if the tax is paid by June 5 and the resulting demand has raised the value of the notes to within 82 per cent of par. The owners were unsuccessful in an attempt to force tenants to pay half of the tax. Kwangtung mllllu?’ headquar. ters have announced that their armies, supported by the Can- tonese navy and air forces and by former Kwangsi troops which recently arrived from Hankow, were approaching the environs of Wuchow, headquarters of the Kwangsi forces.
