I Our Secret Ambition. —By Gaar Williams ! BEDTIME STORIES BY THORNTON Strange Robin. o, Vo7, Slow to ofter threats, or in their wake will come regrets. —Old Mother Nature. Welcome Robin and Mrs. Robin had arrived early in the Spring and had gone straight to the Old Orchard. They had intended to build their nest there. They looked it all over, but somehow they couldn't agree as to the best place to build. What Welcome liked, Mrs. Robin didn't like, and what Mrs. Robin liked, Welcome didn't like. So, having Jooked the Old Orchard all over, they began to look elsewhere, Finally they found a place that just suited both of them. It was in a tree close to Farmer Brown's house. Welcome Robin flew to the top of the tree and poured out his happiness. “Cheer-up, cheer-up, cheer-up!” he sang. Every one who heard him did cheer up. They couldn't help it. Just listen- ing to him was enough to make one cheer up. The very spirit of Spring was in those cheery notes. Mrs. Robin spent no time listening. She started right in on the building of that nest, But you ‘may be sure that she enjoyed Welcome's Spring song quite as much as any one ‘else—perhaps a little more. After a while Welcome flew over. He wanted to do his part. Bul alighted close to where the nest was being built, he got a glimpse of a strange Robin, and the stranger was close by. Welcome didn't like it. He wanted no strangers around his home. He had no objcetions to other Ribins building in the Old Orchard, or even . Frozen dessert, . Strict, . Lift. . Maker of suits. . Without flame. . Property. . Welcome Robin changed his position and while he was doing it the stranger disappeared. Right away Welcome forgot the whole matter. Probably the stranger had just hap- pened along and was now on his way elsewhere. Welcome flew down to puil a few worms from the ground. There seemed to be nothing he could do just then about the nest and so he flew back to sing his message of cheer once more. A little later when he flew down near the nest he once more saw the stranger. He didn't like it. He didn't like it at all that this stranger should be hang- ing around. He spoke to Mrs. Robin about it. “I haven't seen any stranger around here,” said Mrs. Robin. “I don't believe there’s another Robin in this neigh- i N When it was all settled | horhood “There is,” declared Welcome. “I've seen him'twice. I don’t like his way. I see him'and then he disappears. Why isn’t he honest? Why doesn’t he come out where I can say something to him? He is spying on us.” Mrs. Robin paild no heed. She was too busy. If there was another Robin around she didn’t care. It didn't con- cern her. Still, she did think it was queer that she hadn't seen that Robin. So, as she worked, she kept watch for him. But she didn’t see him. No, sir, she didn’t see him! So you can TINI how surprised she was when a little later Welcome reported seeing that stranger again. Welcome was getting all worked up over it and he was pusz- zled. That stranger always mant to disappear as if by magic. Welcome never could see where he went and this made it all the more provoking. “That fellow means no good,” de- clared Welcome Robin. “If he did he wouldn't be 50 sneaky. If I get a chance I'll teach him a lesson. Yes, T'll teach him a lesson!” (Copyright, 1929.) L . Imitation pearl. . Seold. \ . LAllith's successor. . Highways. . Citizens of the world. .
