CALLES, RETIRING, STILL WILL HELP, Message of Retirement Holds Offer to Aid Government When Needed. By the Assoclated Pre MEXICO CITY, May 21.—Gen, Plu-| tarco Ellas Calles today was free once more from the trials of years at the| head or near the head of the Mexican government. In his new message of re- tirement there was, however, as when he left the presidency last December, | the offer to come back whenever the present Mexican government might | need him. His resignation as minister of war, together with the acceptance of Presi- dent Portes Gil, as published today contained the words: “My atitude has been and continues to be one of com- pletely accepting the responsibilities of the revolutionary government over which you (President Portes Gil) pre- side. Wants to Withdraw Completely. “You may be sure I would not have | refused my help in the last crisi matter what had been the mllitary‘ post._you offered me.” The resignation closed with a state- ment that since the military problem | AW was concluded he would withdraw, hop- | ing there would be no further need for his services. Friends of the former president de- elared he wished to withdraw as com- pletely as possible from public life, merely keeping his figure in the back- ground as a possible stabilizing influ ence for the “revolutionary,” govern- ment as the present regime is called. Election Storm Is Ahead. He is expected heis to remain in Mexico indefinitely, at least until after year’s presidential elections, storm which the Portes Gil administ tion still has to weather. He has aba doned former plans to visit Europe partly for this reason and partly lest such & visit be construed by his ene- mies as fear of their threats and as affirming their statements that he bar- ined for certain successes in“the re- bellion with assurances he would not Jong remain in Mexico. In one well informed quarter it was said the rebellion had been a great strain on him and that he wished a chance in the next few months to better his health, which has not been good, PILOT DIES, STUDENT HURT IN PLANE CRASH Capt.
