~ Athletic Sy System at University of Virginia Is Likely to Be Fully Reorganized CAVALIERS MINUS LEADER IN SPORTS Quitting of Brown, Who Did| Fine Work, Paves Way for a Readjustment. BY H. C, BYRD. * REORGANIZATION of the whole athletic system at the Univer- sity of Virginia seems probable. The resignation of Ellis Brown, graduate manager for the last six years, to go into the wholesale coal business, leaves the Charlottesville school without & head and actually puts | it in a position where it can effect any | changes in its plan of operation that it feels desirable. Virginia right now virtually is in the position of a university without an ath- letic organization, except for the com- mittees in control. The only coach it has obtained for next year is Abel, who has been placed in charge of foot ball, and it undoubtedly will take advantage of its opportunities. No announcement has been made at Virginia as to what is intended, but it is only a common- sense conjecture that it will not let go such a golden opportunity to effect the Her;:‘ of organization best suited to its needs. Brown Deserves Credit. Tt must not be thought that Ellis Brown is leaving the university under pressure, nor that his work at Virginia ' has not been good. As a matter of fact, Brown has been urged to continue, and certainly he has accomplished great things during his regime. The placing of Virginia on good relationship with other schools in the State has been due almost solely to Brown's diplomacy, courtesy and consideration, and that alone has been a real achievement. As a representative of mo'.her Vir- ginia school recently said, “Ellis Brown has done a fine thing at Virginia in making the other schools in the State like Virginia, because we like to play Virginia and have very pleasant rela- tionships now, whereas a few years ago everybody at our schools hated any- thing that Yas tinged with Charlottes- ville colors. Virginia hl! had for the last several years virtually a triple control of its athletics. It has had a faculty commit- tee, and under that a so-called three- three-three committee, made up of three members of the faculty, three members of the student body and three members of the alumni association. In addition to this it has had a graduate manager, who was actively in charge. ‘This arrangement has hardly ever been as effective as would have been a single ing head, and it is this arrange- ment that is likely to come in for an 'l!{hmbeen known for some time that the alumn! feel the system is not con- ducive to best interests of athletics, and. more or less strangely, the alumni feel that the board on which they are repre- , sen the best possible. Not only are the interesis greatly divergent, but S e £ 13 g sound thinkers among the alumni ve come to the conclusion that it is to have the alumni actively interested in the management of ath- is felt that alumni interest lends toward the helping out of a ro- out by somebody Wi and the absence of a number of the | expected contestants. The tourney will | R be staged next Thursday, followed, as usual, by luncheon at the clubhouse, reservations for which should be made in advance through Mrs. Campbell, club manager. All woman members of the club who are interested in the golf program are urged to attend next Thursday whether | they intend to play or not, according to Mrs. B. T. Merchant, newly elected chairman, as new by-laws have been drawn up governing tournament play in the weekly green events, which must | | be passed on by the group. These will | | be the chief topic for discussion at the | luncheon meeting. | Players are remlnded that in the event of rain a bridge program is al- | ways arranged at the clubhouse, so that they can count upon finding something | to do, regardless of the verdict handed down by the weather man. All golfers are urged to report, rain or shine, for the Thursday matches, as often the course is playable in the afternoon, if not in the morning, in which event the committee will arrange for play to fol- low luncheon rather than precede it i( a large enough field turns out. In ti meantime a round of bridge will fill m the rainy hours. //, Z Entries close this evening for the Women in Sport OSTPONEMENT of the Army,|their program this scason.
