Cab Driver’s Fares Take Machine as He Inspects Rear Light While William G. Lehman of 4716 Eighth street was inspecting the lights of his taxicab last night his two “fares” jumped into the front seat and sped away with his machine. Lehman reported to tenth pre- cinct police that at 11 o'clock he received a call to Catholic Uni- versity. There he found two well dressed young men about 18 and 20 years old, who got in and di- rected him to drive away. As they were passing through the Soldiers’ Home grounds. the youths called to him to stop, saying that his rear light was out of order. Recognizing the colored driver of an alleged speeding car on Pennsylvania avenue near Twining City southeast shorily before noon today, Policeman C. E. Ripperger of the eleventh pre- cinct, who had just parked his car alongside the road, returned to his ma- chine and started in pursuit. Traffic of Pennsylvania Avenue Bridge was congested, but Ernest Reed, the driver, managed to cross the bridge without an accident and reach Thir- teenth street and Pennsylvania avenue southeast before Ripperger overtook him and placed him under arrest. Search of the car, according to the police, disclosed 25 bottles of corn liquor. Reed, who gave an address in the 1900 block of Twelfth street, was held on charges of illegal possession and transportation of intoxicants and speed- ing. His car and liquor were seized. Senator Walsh paid high tribute to the quarter century service of the archbishop. Rear Admiral William S. Benson, re- tired, also praised Archbishop Curley for his work in this archdiocese, partic- ularly referring to his part in the devel- opment of Catholic schools in the rural sections. Right Rev.
