THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. 0, TUESDAY, APRIT 23, 1029 T0POLOBAMPOHELD KEY T SINALOA Town of 300 Inhabitants Is Vitally Important as Mex- ican Seaport. s ., “Topolobampo, to which & United States Navy destroyer was dispatched to protect American interests, is a city of only 300 native inhabitants, yet it is an important port in the northern art of Sinaloa state, Mexico,” says & ulletin from the National Geographic Soclety. The town faces a large landlocked harbor with a deep water port inside, but a series of sand bars acioss the entrance of the habor prevent vessels of more than 16-foot draft reaching the port's one dock. Topolobampo is the southern terminus of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railroad, which, when completed, will connect the town with Kansas City, Mo. Town Without Streets. “There are mno streets in Topolo- bampo, and only one-mule-wide trails penetrate the thick brush and forests of the hills that lie at its back door. All cargoes for shipment from the port are brought to the dock by rail and hoisted from freight cars to waiting vessels he Kansas City, Mexico & Orient 1s completed as far as Fuerte, Sinaloa, about 65 miles northeast of Topolo- | bampo. To this line the port owes even | its small development. The dock is owned by the railroad, and the com- pany maintains a hospital for its em- ployes in the town. erhaps the greatest drawbacks to The Palais Royal This is practically wholesale cost! The Southern Pacific of Mexico crosses the international border at Nogales, Ari- zona-Mexico, and, in its course down the west coast of Mexico bisects Sinaloa state. Americans Own Ranches. “While sugar, bananas and cotton are important products of the region near Topolobampo, shrimp fishing has long been a leading industry among the Indians along the north coast of Sinaloa. The port derives it name from the shrimp fisheries, although translated into English it means ‘Tiger Water. The natives will tell the traveler that a visit to the shrimp fisheries will con- vince him of the propriety of the name for the declining rays of the sun upon swarms of these golden crustaceans give the effect of a tiger's skin, mottled in purple and gilt and gray. The shrimps are dried for shipment to China by way of San Francisco. “An extensive area of American- owned property lies near Los Mochis, abous 15 miles up the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient from Topolobampo. ‘Tortillas, thin Mexican flapjacks, beans and pork are the outstanding articles on the native bill of fare in North Sina- loa, and it was the Americans’ love for a more varied menu that instituted the establishment of an American Club at Los Mochis. Italy’s population is now estimated at 1 00. 4 Talk About Smartness! % PALAIS ROYAL Here It Is!
