Dening, International Player, Found Dead With Pistol at Side. By the Associated Press. LONDON, April 10.— Sporting and military circles were mystified today at the strang~ death last night of Capt. John Pitt Dening, international polo player. Ncu until the inquest Friday, it was believed, however, would all the circumstances explaining the tragedy be unraveled. Capt. Dening’s body was found lock- ed in a room at his hotel at Westmin- ster, where he had been staying while in England on leave from the Indian army. There was a bullet wound in the head and a revolver lying by his « side. He was captain of British army polo team which played at Meadowbrook in 1925, seemed to hotel attendants and fellow guests yesterday to be in good health and good spirits. He was talk- ing cheerfully to acquaintances in the hotel yesterday afternoon when he asked suddenly to be excused and hur- ried away. Apparently he went to his bedroom and locked the door. Soon after a shot was heard in the room. The room was opened and the horseman’s body found, a revolver beside it. Police im- mediately took charge and found let- ters and a diary in the room which they held as providing possible clues to solution of the mystery. Capt. Dening, who was 34 years old, was_lent recently to the Indian state of Bhopal as commandant of Bhopal native infantry. He had been long Tecognized as one of the best polo play- ers in the British army. He was an 8-goal man and in India constantly practiced the game. While he was captain of the British challenge team of 1925 he was pinned beneath his pony which fell after col- lision with another player. He suf- fered a slight concussion and was com- pelled to retire but soon afterward re- covered. He was six feet four inches tall and weighed 182 pounds. He was known as one of the hardest hitting forwards in British polo and, besides his cap- taincy of the 1925 team, served as No. 1 on the team of 1927. CANADIAN CATHEDRAL IS SWEPT BY FLAMES Second Church Edifice to Be Hit Within Fortnight—Loss Esti- mated at $50,000. By the Associated Press. TORONTO, Ontario, April 10.—An other Canadian cathedral, the second within a fortnight, was swept by flames Monday. Fire damaged the interior of the chancel of the Anglican Cathedral of St. Alban the Martyr nere, destroying altar furnishings, damaging an organ and ruining several memorial windows. ‘The damage was estimated at from $40,000 to $50,000. Three firemen were injured slightly ‘when the floor of the chancel collapsed. On March 30 St. Albert Cathedral at Gaspe, Quebec, together with the pres- ‘bytery and a private residence, were de- stroyed. The damage in that case was estimated at $100,000. The height at which large hailstones begin to form, says a European scientist, is between 15,000 and 40,000 feet above the earth.
