All young Americans should be “waterproofed” against accidents, Com- modore Wilbur T. Longfellow, field di- rector of the Red Cross in charge of life-saving and first-aid work, declared in a letter to the Y. M. C. A. yesterday heartily indorsing the “learn to swim” program to be staged in the boys' de- partment of the Y, M. C. A. this week under the auspices of The Star. No boy in Washington should con- sider himself at all “grown up,” sald the commodore, until he can swim easily. He offered the full assistance of the Red Cross to the Y. M. C. A. in mak- ing the .“learn to swim” campaign a success and has arranged for a half dozen swimming experts to augment the staff of the junior Y. M. C.'A. in giving the daily swimming lessons this week to boys between the ages of 10 and 18 who are non-swimmers. More than 500 boys.have enrolled for the lessons, which will be given free of charge. Outlines Basiec Principles, Emphasizing the value of teaching boys the rudimentary principles of swimming, such as will be taught in the Y. M. C. A. course, Commodore Longfellow wrote: “It has been found that most drown- ings occur within 30 feet of safety, less than 10 yards from where the victim of an accident might stand up in shal- low water. It will be a real beginning for the several hundred boys to learn to navigate 50 feet, and to be able to let their feet down in deep water and then to recover a swimming position by — FOR LOST ANIMALS. apply Ammlm- League. 340 Maryland ave_sw.
