Society Is Looking Forward To Period of Festivities In the Coming Springtime Seuron Following the Lenten Dfiys‘ Pictured in Gay Colors—Program of the Eastertide : 'Partly Outlined. BY SALLIE V, H. PICKETT. 8 Washington society arises from its 40 days of penitence it faces weeks of gay life in which almost every phase of enter- taining will have a part. There was a tea at the Italian embassy yesterday afternoon as soon as the gray curtain of Lent lifted, and today society, at least a hundred strong, will wend the well beaten way over the road to Friendship, where Mr. and Mrs. Edward Beale McLean will entertain at their annual Easter Sunday breakfast—a custom established by the late Mr. and Mrs. ‘John R. McLean more than 30 years ago, and 'scarce a President and First Lady. of the Land have missed being guests there in all this time. TOMORR.OW night the polo ball will so completely engage society that there will be little left to do but dine and then attend the dance. A gay spirit obtains at this annual event, given by the War Department polo team for the athletic fund, and every one from the President down to the last ranking officer has its success at heart. THERE was apparently a little homesickness in the fact of Mrs. Hoover going over to her S street home Tuesday afternoon to join her sister, Mrs. J. H. Large, at an informal tea she was giving for some of their old friends. Mrs. Large and their uncle, Mr. Henry, are occupying the residence while it is being made ready for the occupancy of Senator and Mrs, Frederick C. Walcott of Connecticut, who have leased it. LATER in the week Mrs. Hoover showed her fondness for children when she honored little Suzanne Boone, daughter of the White House physician, with her presence at a party on the Mayflower when 60 juveniles shared the joys of meeting her. She also found time to give a gracefully arranged tea at the te House, when the ladies of the cabinet were afforded an opportunity to say good-bye to Mrs. Kellogg, who with the former Secretary of State has sailed for a vacation in Europe. A HEN, too, there were groups of out-of-town visitors received by special appointment by Mrs. Hoover, and there are always guests at the White House. With them for the week end besides the Secre- tary of State, Mr. Stimson, are Mr. and Mrs. James Rippen and Mrs. Edgar Rickard and her daughter, Miss Peggy Rickard, of New York The White House gardens are bright with early pr'mgl blossoms and flowering bushes, and no First Lady of the Land has ever more enjoyed and a%preciaud the grounds than does Mrs. Hoover. But there are no advance dates from the White House and everythln% is happening as casually as thoughit' were-not the chief point of interest in the universe. 3 ———— N the almost overcrowded calendar for Easter week are two in- teresting events for the Vice President, Mr. and Mrs. Larz Anderson giving a dinner for him Thursday night, and Tuesday evening he and his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Everett Gann, will be guests at a reception and musicale at the May- flower with Mrs. Karl D.
