TINANCIALL CONVERTIBLE BOND ISSUES SHOW GAIN International Telephone 4 1-2s Prove Market Leader With Rapid Advance. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 28.—The entire bond market today was overshadowea by the sensational advance in Interna- tional Telephone 4!7 per cent converti- bles, which represented a large propor- tion of the total transactions. Opening at 1243 to 1325, col plred with 123 at the closing yester 24 rose on large units to 130, v\mch as 10 points above the price to which they had advanced earlier in the year. This movement was in line with the heavy gains that were taking place in the old and new stock into which they are convertible. Profit taking develo] after the 7-point rise and cut of part of the gain, but in the afternoon }he lbonm worked up to a still higher evel. Other convertibles were strong, but gains in them were limited to a point, with the exception of Anaconda Copper s, which rose 4 points. Anglo-Chilean 7s declifed a point and then rallied. Antllles Sugar 7!3s advanced 4 points, | although the Cuba Cane Sugar issues | \x°re heavy. Dodge 6s were slightly higher. Commnclnl Investment Trust 518 Inned to make up much of yester- day’s 7-point drop. United States Oovemment issues had a better tone. The fourth Liberty 448 rallied 3 and the “Treasury 4s 1,. Short-term issues are under pressure due io the prevailing high rates for time money and acceptances. The changes in the legal list of rails and public utilities were smaller than they have been on any recent day. This was also true of second and third grade corporation bonds. In the foreign list an advance in| French government and municipal issues after the recent sharp decline was & prcminent development. Belgians were also stronger. Throughout the Jist of inactive dollar bonds there are sbundant signs of weak market posi- tions, with difficulty in selling even small blocks except at sharp concassions in the price. This is apparent not only in listed but in unlisted issues, and applies especially to South and Central American and Southeastern European UNITED (Saiae are Lib3%s... 50 Lib1st4%se 73 STATES. 12 $:.000 ) Sales. MOTOR FIRMS IN BATTLE ABROAD Different Methods Employed by Leading Producers to Cap- ture Trade. BY CAMILLE LE MERCIER. Special Cable Dispatch to The Star. PARIS, March 28.—The European motor car market has become a battle- fleld for the General Motors Corpora- tion and the Ford Motor Co. General Motors fired the first shot last week by acquiring for $30,000,000 a controlling interest in the Opel Motor ‘Works, which is Germany's largest pro- ducer of motor cars. This correspondent is authoritatively informed that the Ford Co. will soon meet General Motors' challenge by lh! creation in Europe of large plants for mass production of its new model A. It is evident now that the most im- portant automotive companies in the world intend to use in their competition for prominence on the continent two absolutely different lines of action. The policy of General Motors, as ex- premd recently by its president, Alfred P. Sloan, is based on the fact that Eu- ropean customers do not like the Ameri- can type of car, which is too expensive to keep. Taxes on automobiles are heavy in all European countries and are mainly based on horsepower and gaso- nne wnmmptlnn European customers light cars, speedy, but small con- numm of gasoline. For lnmnce. in France 90 per cent out of 1,000,000 cars are of 10 wer. On the contrary, Ford does not admit that Eul n customers dislike Ameri- can models, but admits that transporta- tion costs and_customs are prohibitive. Consequently, Ford will produce a new model A in European plants. PARIS BOURSE PRICES. Mortgage Money Loaned At Low Interest Rates Tyler & Rutherford Representing Mutual Benefit Life Ins.
