R.C. A.ISEXPECTED 10 GET PERMITS Stations to Be Built to Com- pete With Postal and Western Union. BY MARTIN CODEL. Permits authorizing thc construction | of radio stations for a radio telegraph network linking at lcast 28 large cities of the country will probably be issued to R. C. A. Communications, Inc., the newiy formed subsidiary of the Radio | Corporation of America, shortly after the Federal Radio Commission begins o function with its full membership. Anhnugn most of the continental short waves have already been allo- cated, the commission’s engineers be-| lieve there are enough more to uke[ care of most of the expressed needs of the two big companies, whose appli- | cations were temporarily passed over | last Chri: These aplicants are the R. C. A, ch seeks more continental | and proposes also to extend | its transoceanic channels for the in- land traffic, and the two Mackay radio | and telegraph companies. It is now evident that the R. C. A.| intends to pursue its o: al plans of | at in inland | with the Western 1 tal Telegraph com- ! panies for intercity traffic and to serve as pick-up end delivery points for ra- diograms destined for or coming from | abroad. On the other hand, it is un-' derstood that Mackay interests have | practically abandoned their plan for an | inland radio system and intend rather to inaugurate transoczanic radio services on the wave lengths obtained from the commission. Universal Is Building. In the meantime the Universal Wire- less Communications Co., granted 40 channels for another Nation-wide radio telegraph net, is going forwagd with its project. Two of the 110 stations it proposes to erect have their buildings completed, one at Scobeyville, N. J., and the other at Chicago. The site for a third, at Cincinnati, has been selected Sites for other stations at Buffalo, Phil- adelphia and Washington are said to have been obtained also. The Universal company, newest en- trant in the wireless field and “dark | horse” in the competitive struggle that has started between the radio companies and between wire and radio companies, has its engneers in the field testing for sites for the 25 stations it expects to have completed by the end of the year. Dr. John Nathansohn, general manager, has gone to Eurcpe, but the technical gtaff 1& under the direction of Howard Ford, chief engineer. The commission has stipulated as a condition of the wave grants that the company have at least 10 stations ready for operation this yen. and all the others within three years. The Radlo Corporation and Mackay engmeers have been conferring with commission's short-wave engineers on their respective projects. The R. C. A, as far as can be learned, will build stations as soon as it gets the Federal licenses at New York, Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Savannah, Nor- folk, Washington, Philadelphia, Pitts- burgh, Portland, Me.; Buffalo, Schenec- tady, Roc! Editha Fleisher, famous European Iyric soprano, will be the guest star of the General Motors “family party” to-| night over WRC and associated stations instead of Florence Easton, English so- prano, who was originally sched- uled to co-star with Alflo Tedesco, Met- ropolitan Opera Co. tenor. Miss Easton has fallen victim to laryn- gitls. Especially noted in Europe as an terpreter of the songs of Mozart and the operas of Wagner, Mme. Fleisher made her first apeparance in the United Stales with the Wagner- ian Opera Co. Her previous appear- ances before the microphone have been few. She will sing tonight arias and scenes from familiar operas with Te- desco, assisted by a symphony orches- tra and an opera chorus. Outstanding among WRC'’s other mu- sical attractions tonight will be the weekly concerts of Roxy's “Gang” and the A. & P. Gypsies and a special radio version of Bizet's “Carmen” by the Na- tional Grand Opera Co. Solos by Ar- thur 8. Phillips, tenor, will feature the Roxy broadcast, whereas the specialty of the Gypsies will be a group of sea- sonal selections, such as Rachmaninoff’s “Floods of Spring,” Grieg's “To Spring” | M! ;nd Mendelssohn’s immortal “Spring | g, ong.” Editha Fleisher 10:05—Weather Bureau reports, 205.4—WJISV—1,460, (Independent Publishing Co.) 6:30—Civic Hour. 0—Request program. 0—Massanutten Troubadours. 5-—Joe Purcell, soprano. 8:30—Troubadours. 0—Woodville Brown. 5—The Virginians. 0—Jack Whitcomb, cornetist. 0—The Honolulans, 11:00—Weather report. It is emphasizing ‘ its needs for radie channels to_ com- municate across the Atlantic and Pacific and to South American points. Its cor- porate affiliation with the Postal Tele- graph Co. and the International Tele- Eflm & Telegraph Co. give it adequate and wire extensions throughout the United States and in most Latin Ameri- can countries. ‘Thus the radio telegraph situation to develop into a four-cornered competitive struggle. On the one hand there will be the Western Union, whose officials are avowedly scornful of radio competition and have assiduously kept out of the radio field. Then there are the Mackay-Postal affiliated radio and wire services, the Universal wireless communication radio service between most of the larger cities of the country and m R-ldln Corporation of America rvice, linking at least 28 cities "!eedln " into transoceanic circuits to :bouc 30 tarei;n countries. The Radio Corporation project is being opposed by a group of radio manu- ncturers banded together as the Radio Protective Association.
