FOUR SHOTS FIRED AT PAPAL NUNCIO Vatican Envoy, Walkihg in Spanish King’s Garden, Be- fieved Mistaken for Another. By the Associated Press. LONDON, February 1—Attempted assassination late last evéning of the papal nuncio as he walked in the gar- dens of the royal palace at Madrid gave a new aspect today to Spain’s political upheaval. Previous dispatches from Madrid had indicated all but complete suppression of the Tuesday revolt at Ciudad Real, and had told of arrest and impending trial of those held responsible. Believed Mistaken Identity. It was difficult from this distance and from the scantiness of detail—due to & rigid censorship—to fix the assassina- tion attempt in its proper place in the Spanish political mosaic, but in the carefully worded telephonic advices of the incident there was the inference | — that the shots at the ecclesiastic prob- :lbl\ll' were intended for some one else en- rely. Four shots were fired at the papal “diplomatic repesentative,” believed here to mean the papal nuncio, Mgr. Frederico Tedeschini. All of the shots went wild, and the assailant escaped. Mgr. Tedeschini, who was appointed to the Spanish post in 1921, h: on exceedingly friendly terms w Alfonso XIII and his family and it is believed this friendship may have ac- counted for his presence in the garden, where he was mistaken for another. King Alfonso himself had returned earlier in the day from a hunting trip to San Lucar. In the course of the day he had conferred with Gen. Primo de Rivera, premier, coneerning the sup- )éres]slnn of Tuesday's revolt at Ciudad eal. ‘The Spanish embassy made public early this morning a telegram from Madrid emphatically contradicting re- rts that the Spanish frontier had E:en closed to travelers, either Spanish or foreign. The telegram said they were allowed to circulate freely. Special! Shipment new Spring Bags. $2.95 How Times. Change! Texan Kills Man Who Urged Him to Drink By the Associated Press. WACO, Tex., February 1.—It was_considered a grave soclal error in the “shootin’ seven- ties” era of the Woolly West to spurn a round of drinks, but custom today generally decrees a man can take it or leave it. Chris Bolton was dead today because he didn't take into ac- count the changing times. With a_companion he entered Herbert Mayr's filling station yesterday and proposed Mayr Join them in a drink. Mayr de- clined, and Bolton, a cafe owner, drew an automatic and fired five times in the general direction of the gas station’s proprietor. Mayr went for his rifle and killed his insistent visitor with one shot. A technical murder charge was filed, but it was said at the dis- trict attorney's office that the charge would not be prosecuted. A Grammar That Is Different.
