At Brainard's call one of his secretaries opened. She was a young Diana for supple grace. She crossed the floor with what any man might consider a stride. She always came to within arm’s length to deliver a message, Brainard had noticed. He smiled at it now. Even Van Winkle’s presence made no difference. Brainard had retained the arrangement of rooms on this floor, merely using two as a private office suite. It suited his whim to live here in the heart of his interests. He h: inherited a good deal of money. !ads parents had died during his early boy- hood. Relief Brainard had taken him first to her home, and afterward, when he had finished college and launched in his eager, lonely studies, she had come to live near him. He had not wanted the luxury of a large establishment. He was well contet with his few rooms and Ushigi. Wealth, now apparently about to flow in upon him in limitless flood, was scarcely an object of desire to him. He had not the background of a life work for science to make the triumph of discovery paramount. In- deed, he considered "himself but a raw student. The joy he felt he himself compared humorously now, in this mo- ment of peculiar satisfaction, to the unreasoning tlation of a child who is tassed into sudden elevation. What the instinct is that finds happiness in this he could not have told. Being up and looking down—an object of eyes! Was it the eternal human desire to show off that was tickled? There was a spice added to the thrill of power. (Continged in Tomorrow's Star) . First Sergeant Is Retired. Having had more than 30 years’ ac- tive military service, First Sergt. Thomas B.
