STRAWBERRY CROP BRINGS FORTUNES Winter Berries, Selling as High as $2.25 a Quart, Fea- ture Fast Dealing.. By the Associated Press. PLANT CITY, Fla, January 1.— ‘Winter strawberries—the nation’s most expensive table luxury—are streaming into market from hundreds of patches unknown to any agricultural census but always ready with their annual supply from other crops, but largely from pro- ceeds as their sales are made. This little town is a busy place dur- ing the market season. There is a mod- ern auction yard with all the facilities of any produce market. When the yard is filled the gates are shut and buyers pass among the wagons, inspect the crates and make offers. Bids are raised back and forth. If the price does not suit the producer, he can drive out, rent a refrigerator and take his chances on a higher figure. Usually he takes the highest bid. He must decide within a half hour whether he will sell, for there are other wagons waiting their turn at the gate. Most growers are known to the buyer by the way they pack their boxes. Seldom does a buyer “dump” a box of berries to see if the small bnes are at the bottom— but he may if he chooses, for it is his unwritten right. A few growers take enough pride in their produce to place their name on their boxes. Culls are so scarce that a canning and preserving plant established here some time ago was forced out of business. THE EVENING MINING FARM HOPES FOR ANOTHER BOOM JBSE L Development of Colorado Springs, Colo., Predicted if Ore Prices Advance. CENTRAL CITY, Colo. (#)—Forlorn and deserted, living in memory of. the past and in hope of the future. Such is this once prosperous mining town in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Old-timers predict another boom for | § the town if silver and gold ore prices rise a little more. Even now a few are taking up the pick and shovel. ‘When Central City was settled in 1859, immediately after the discovery of gold in Clear Creek Valley, near Idaho Springs, the rush to the West was in full swing, inspired by tales of “gold for the taking” in Califoala and of fertile lands between the Mississippi and the Pacific. Many who started for California halt- ed to try their fortunes in Colorado. Some prospered. Others felt the sting of defeat and went Westward again or returned to the East. Central City was incorporated in 1864 and became the seat of Gilpin County. A large, square, red brick schoolhouse was built. The Teller House, erected by Senator Henry Moore Teller, made the town famous for one of the best hotels of the early days. Ruin overtook the city when ore prices fell so low production costs prohibited, mining. The exodus began, and now STAR,” WASHINGTON, D. C. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1929. the golden years are only a memory. Hundreds of deserted mines still mark the hillsides like gloomy frowns on faces of those who have met disappointment. Yet residents of this town ll‘lgehnpe- fully at every fractional rise in mar- ket for precious metal ores. Thin Shell Filled Dainties ADOPT “HIGH FINANCE.” Wiholesalers Put Scallop Fishermen in “Get-Rich-Quick” Class. PORTLAND, Me. (#).Wholesale fish concerns here complain that some scal- lop fishermen have emulated the meth- ods of get-rich-quick financiers. They assert they have been buying “watered stock.” Some of the Casco Bay small boatmen, who are dragging glant scallops this Winter, the buyers aver, shuck out the meat and soak it overnight in fresh water. ‘This, it is said, causes the scallops Phone to swell appreciably and take on much weight. Twenty pounds in their nat- ural state grow to 25 pounds after 12 hours of soaking. It is hard to detect such doctoring by appearance although the “fresh water cure” is said to detract considerably from the fine flavor of the scallop. . Remember Markets. CASSEL, Germany (#)—A statue representing & market woman is about to be erected on the square here to commemorate the former markets that were held there several times a week. 25 POLICEMAN USES SKATES. Optimists estimate an assured har- vest of 5,000,000 quarts, 500,000 quarts more than were picked in the record season of 1924-25. A long, dreary drizzle did the work. It broke up a drought that for several weeks kept producers extremely uneasy, and by supplying moisture necessary to bring the fruit out for the holiday trade gives rise to the prospect that growers in this community will add more than $1,000,- 000 to their bank accounts. First shipments to the north brought from $2 to $2.25 a quart. Later 1,000 quarts were sold at $1.25 a quart. Sales are expected to reach 5,000 quarts a day around the first of the year. The shipments will eontinue through March, but as the sea- son progresses prices are expected to arop. Plant City makes the first shipments of Winter strawberries, and by being the earliest on the market gets the highest prices. Northern Florida fol- lows, and then Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina, Illinois, Delaware and New Jersey market their €rops. Farmers have found the strawberry an excellent Midwinter crop, to be grown when their land otherwise would | be idle. In many sections it has be- | come the “cash crop.” Here the yield is usually from 2,500 to 3,000 qusrt.s'to} the acre and worth from $750 to $1,000 to the grower. Unlike most farmers, the strawberry grower does not have to wait for his money. He drives into town with the day's harvest and when he goes home his money is in his pocket.
