6 PRINTER HONORED FOR LONG SERVIGE Edward J. Gardner Retires| After 36 Years in Star Composing Room. More than 36 years of continuous | service for The Star, as & member of its composing room staff, came to an end for Edward J. (Teddy) Gardner yesterday. Gathered in a large .group around the silent linotype machines, and behind the forms on which the Christmas edition of the paper for which he worked so lorfg, had been | “put to bed,” his friends and associ- | ates of many years presented Gardner with a clock as a symbol of the friend- ship for the man who worked so long | and faithfully with them. Some of them have been with The Star almost as long as Gardner, and will soon be l‘!llr?d as Gardner was a few days ago. “Teddy” Gardner came on The Star on April 13, 1892, Behind him stretched years of apprenticeship in the printing trade in England,‘and a term of serv- ice with the British Army. All those years he served The Star faithfully and well as one of the anonymous group of men who play a large part in getting out a newspaper. Far up in the clatter of the composing room, where batteries of typesetting machines click away th> hours from early momlng until the night force goes home, “Teddy"” Gardner worked his linotype machine. He was retired on December 17, and yesterday. on Christmas day, the men with “%flm he had worked gathered around him to present him with their token.. The formal presentation was made by James T. Casebeer, and the gift was arranged by a committee head- ed by Raymond T. Babcock. Gardner makes his home ‘at 4000 llinois avenue, where he resides with Mrs. Gardner. A son, Edward, is em- ployed in the advertising department of the Washington Post. The elder Gardner was born Jnnuary 16, 1866. GRIEVES JES FOR HER DOLL. Girl Hit by Car Is Uninjured, but Gift Is Smashed. Little 7-year-old Helen Marie Pear- son, 5320 Eighth street, grieves today for her doll, which was smashed yes- terday when an automobile struck the girl, but did not injure her. The doll was a Christmas present and Helen was taking her out for an airing. Just as she had lowered the carriage from the curb at Eighth and Hamilton streets, an automobile driven by Noah Hixon, 54 years old, 2803 Rhode Island Eznue northeast, backed into her and e d “Dolly” and the carriage were broken beyond repair. The girl gathered up the broken fragments of the toy and rushed home in tears. LEGEND TO BE PRESENTED The fourth annual presentation of “The Other Wise Man,” Dr. Henry Van Dykes Christmas-time 1 will pen tomorrow night at 8:30 o'c! at Lu'.her Place Memorial Church and con- tinue uch evening through Saturday. Bess Davis Schreiner, who the legend for presentation, has adhered to the Van Dyke text, and the scenes will have musical accompaniment. Information obtained here from widely scattered districts of the mid- State group of counties indicated the thieves are particularly active this Winter. On the Chewaucan range, one of the large cattle-raising communities of the Northwest, stock men have been forced to put on extra riders to guard against the rustlers, These guards are using horses and automobiles in pmtecung the big herds. Present activity of rustlers is at- tributed to the high price of beef. A good animal will bring $100, making a night's work profitable even though only one steer is stolen. It is suspected that the beef cattle are hauled long distances to market, perhaps in some instances being taken out of the State. IBENTIFY GIRL IN WRECK.
