DRY ARRESTS GAIN BSOS Jump From 235,612 in 1920 to 557,369 in 1927, Is Reported. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 26.—A survey by the Moderation League, made pub- lic tc says that police records in 383 cities show that prrests for in- aticn rose from 235,612 in 1920 to 27. annual report of the hich has for its announced restoration of temperance,” at the figures have brought ation to the conclusion that ad act has failed utterly to intended to do, namely, mperance and sobriety.” of total arrests by years in cities as compiled in the report decline in arrests for drunk- enness beginning in 1914, when the fig- ure stood at 530,367, to 235,612 in 1920, the year national prohibition went into effect. An exception in the decline is noted in 1916 with 589,364 arrests, which is explained in the league report as the result of the pre-war prosperity m. Beginning with 1021 the table shows rapid annual increases in the number of arrests from 319,528 to 557,369. The report declares that a marked increase in drinking by minors has been noted throughout the period. The increase in arrests for intoxica- tion in New York City, the report says, has been at a slower rate than in other centers from which figures were drawn. Birmingham, Ala, and Atlanta, Ga., both show increases of 500 per cent for the period. Bigger Gain in Dry States. The figures, the report goes on, in- | dicate a greater jump in States which were dry before national prohibition than in the so-called wet States. Police reports from 268 cities, where liquor was sold legally prior to 1920, gave 424,- 205 arrests in 1014, as against 423,042 in 1927, In 120 citles in States that had dry |1aws before the passage of the eight- | eenth amendmegt, the leagué says, the figures show an increase from 106,072 in 1914 to 134,327 in 1927. In the last fiscal year 12,554,686,690 2-cent postage stamps were used. - THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON. MISS MURIEL G. SEABURY TO WED W. W.
