The star, which is 5 feet from point to point, ‘will be visible from vir- tunlly every section of the city. As in previous years, the star was erected by the George A. Fuller Co,, the cathedral contractors, as an expression from the workmen of their appreciation of the religious lmpomnce of the ca- thedral undertakin, Directly beneath tne star in the crypt of the great edifice is the Bethlehem Chapel, where religious services ;fifm priate to the Christmad season be celebrated. Story of Nativity. The first ion of the cathedral to be ‘comple this chapel is devoted to a symbolic presentation of the story of the Holy Nativity. Every detail of its adornment, including statues, stained glass windows and hu-rellefs. follows a remarkable and original scheme of sym- bolism and provides a pictorial narrative of the first Christmas. On the reredos or screen above the altar is an exquisite bas-relief of the scene in the manger, while the windows, statues and carvings present scenes and characters assoclated with the Nativity, including the human ancestors of Jesus; the prophets, who predicted His coming; the three wise men visiting the Babe of Bethlehem; and the words of the Messianic prophecies. Over the door of the chapel proper is carved a suggestion to those entering, the words of Joseph in his dream: “Thou shalt call His name Jesus.” The remainder of the verse is'on the other side as a suggestion to those going out: “1He shall save His people from their sins.” Even the carvings which embellish the reredos are related to Christmas, for they show the leaf and blossom of the Glastonbury thorn which ancient legend avers took root and blossomed on Christ- mas day when planted by Joseph of Arimathea at Glastonbury Abbey, Eng- ]t“;fe. in the dawn of the Christian cen- uries. At Washington Cathedral there is much interest in the Glastonbury tra- dition because an offshoot of the holy 1902 by the Bishop of Bath and Wells, is growing on the Cathedral Close, in a special inclosure in front of St. Alban’s the National Cathedral School for Boys. One of the three beautiful chapels in the crypt of the edifice is. named after Joseph of Arimathea, who, ac- cording to the legend, carried the thorn as a staff in his journey from the Holy Land to Britain. The Je- rusalem altar, presented to the cathe- dral by the Episcopal Diocese of the United States, is also associated with Joseph of Arimathea. It was built of stone taken from the same ledge in the garden of Joseph of Arimathea in which Christ’s tomb is believed to have been hewn. In addition to the daily cathedral services and special Christmas cele- brations which will mark Washington Cathedral's observance of the holy season, the cathedral authorities are focusing attention on the scacred sig- nificance of the day by the distribu- tion of lEecuxl Christmas _greeting cards which emphasize the fact that niversary. More than 900,000 individual cnrds containing reproductions of religious paintings and quotations from Christ- mas anthems and poems, have been distributed. On one car is a Christmas greeting from Right Rev. James E. Freeman, Bishop of Washington, which will be received by 50,000 or more persons t.hroughout the country, Chicago Church Fedemuon repre- ;:nts 800 churches with 300,000 mem- TS, New (‘!Ilgurrh 16th Above Q N.W. 9:45—Classes of the Sabbath 10:00—Arcana Class for nAdu‘lw lsef‘lhby‘Mrl Alice Thacher Post. 11:00—Morning worship.
