Carols, Cantatas, Anthems and Pageants Feature Christmas Musical Celebrations in Washington Churches @ A ‘&%’&@%’&@K@W%’E@W'&@E‘g Christmas Music BY HELEN FETTER A R ARSI IAAIANAIS this week, primarily with m since that angel’s song was T HE birthday of the Christ Child, Jesus of Nazareth, is honored usic. Down through the ages, ever first heard by the Wise Men who saw the star and by the shepherds tending their flocks, music has been traditionally the feature of Christmas celebration. In Washington, since the days a noticeably steady increase in This Christmas, 1928, sees even of the World War, there has been musical productions of all kinds. more_ widespread, well founded, and ambitious music plans for both carolling and the giving of clas- sical music in the churches and institutions of the National Capital than previously in the history of the city. Many cantatas and musical- ageantry will give the more compi n the churches. dramatic productions of colorful licated types of musical observance The variously trained carol groups who will go about in gay bands, costumed in many cases, have co-operated more closely this year through the District of Columbia Federation of Music Clubs, and, as a result, should be much more effective. Dr. Albert Harned’s comparatively new National Capital Oratorio Chorus, which showed such fine drilling and excellent tone in the presentation of Haendei's Christmas oratorio, “The Messiah,” the first of this week, will sing the special Christmas music around the National Community Christmas tr ee at Sherman Square Christmas eve at 7:30 with instrumental accompaniment by the United States Marine Band, Capt. Taylor Branson, conducting, and the tree to be lighted by President Coolidge. In this gesture, accompanied by a blaze of music, Mr. Coolidge will symbolically place the sanction and good will of the whole country—the United States of America— on the holding of this Christmas holiday; a gesture that might well have read in it a world of significance for peace and good will toward all men. .« o» aive DULTS are inclined to worry and fret about the entangling trou- bles of preparing for Christmas celebrations sometimes. Yet, at | heart, practically every individual is still child enough to enjoy thoroughly the Christmas spirit that only comes from such efforts. There are few Scrooges in the world, and Charles Dickens proved that even they have the spirit of eternal youth within them, rusty though the hinges that would close the door upon that spirit may become. In fact, the rustier, the sooner they are apt to break apart and leave that inner radiance exposed in even fuller blaze for its temporary repression. The Ponce de Leon legend is unnecessary for those who believe in Christmas wholeheartedly, with a childlike faith. Christmas is essentially for c! hildren—real children who have yet to taste the stinging nettles of disillusionment. If all the “grown children” would band together to on useless presents for each other put the money spent so tiringly toward giving substantial Christ- mas gifts of musical or other education to the many children of Washington whose parents can not perhaps the Christmas spirit in W: Methodist Episcopal 'HE Christmas music of Hamline Methodist Episcopal Church, Six- teenth at Allison street northwest, will be furnished tomorrow by quartet and chorus choir, un- der the direction of John H.
