Utal 8. c. Hooper, chief of naval communications, reported today that E:d‘l high-frequency installations on Maryland and Utah will handle lll the Hoover party'’s messages and all press matter during the entire trip, Ona of Capt. Hooper's assistants, Lieut, E. Btone, until recently radio officer al’ the Maryland, stated that many of the officers and men have radio receiv- ing sets aboard, said that s set has Mr, Hoover's quarters, Additional radio operators were or- dered aboard both batleships to handle the tremendous volume of word traf- fic that is expected. lmw nrr-m. ments have been made by the Navy De- artment so that all nmnt shall handled by udlc both while the ton | party is at ses and in port. Messages Relayed. Although most of the tour will be in latitudes m-rkl areas of great statie, it is not nt’cmlu that any difficulty will be experienced in contact- ing with Navy radio NPL, at San Diego, or NBA. at Balboa, on short waves around 39 meters. Prom these stations the messages will be relayed directly to radio central at Washington, and thence to their destinations via the regular commercial telegraph systems. Messages to the Hoover party will clear from NAA, Arlington, also on high frequency. Twice a day the reg. ular news summaries, sent daily to lhi of the fleet, will be su lemented special news reports to the party 1 fully informed about developments of particular interest to its members, P ast receivers, working an en- tirely different range of wave lengths from those employed by the battieships in ordinary practice will probably en- counter much interference from statie and from the ship’s radio transmitter, There is a good chance, however, of hearing coastal stations all during the voyage down the West coast on the Maryland and up the East coast on the Utah, according to the naval officers, Some of the higher-powered inland sta- tions may also be heard. The officers expressed the opinion that only slight possibility exists that many stations in the United States will be tuned in after the Maryland is few more days out and until the Utah arrives in the West Indies. Because the vessels will not be far out at sea, the programs of broadcasting stations at Mexico City, Panama, Lima, Valparaiso, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and on varjous islands in the West Indies should be heard.
