And added, “Idiot!" He was ashamed of his own relief— a relief which left him light-hearted to the pitch of giddiness. Had he lost all sense of proportion, of probability? He decided, ruefully, that he evidently had. But his absurd buoyancy, as if a heavy rock had come hurtling down in the direction of his head and had then miraculously missed him, persisted. “Because she's old and poor and probably dowdy, they call her ‘the he mused with a sardonic If she'd been young and be- longed in the fur coat class, she'd have been ‘Mrs. Kane' throughout. The name of Barbara Cavanaugh was not mentioned. “Of course it wouldn't be—it couldn't be, without me.” he reminded himself. “I'm going positively cuckoo. I ought to be psyched. And, by jimmy, the old bird pretty nearly did it, just by the way he looked at me.” Thus disre- spectfully did Peter refer to one of the foremost psychiatrists of the United States. “Piper!” considerably off key. I don't think much of these new-fangled psy- chological methods myself. But there's no denying the old bird has a way with him. Yet Peter had a strong hunch that he had never earned his pay envelope more assuredly than by the wasting of that hour. At last his vigil was rewarded. after a period in which an elevator man, a uniformed policeman from the traffic bureau and two reporters from the press room had variously commented on his low. breathy and monotenous minor whistle as something to be taken to the morgue, to be the equivalent ‘nl an injured cat and a banshee, and to be deserving of 90 days in the “cooler.” That whistle lapsed abruptly* into silence as a tall figurc mounted the steps before him. “Good morning, Dr. Cajanaugh,” Peter extended his hand with the en- | gaging smile of a sm#11 boy hoping for ‘x‘n eqfi_ppermit “I hope you rememb: (not for (To Be Continued) THE EVENING STORY In Defense of a Lady. Objecting to being refused permis- sion to make a left turn at Vermont avenue and H street yesterday by Po- liceman T. E. Marquis, who was direct- ing traffic during a society wedding at St. John's Church, John J. Carmody, local attorney, was arrested for refus- ing to obey an officer's signal, only to have the case against him dismissed because of a_faulty information by Judge Robert E. Mattingly yesterday. ‘The papers under which Carmody was_charged accused him of to obey an officer’s signal to stop,” but the policeman himself admitted the man not only stopped, but remained motionless until directed to proceed. Carmody drove north on Madison Place and tried to make a left turn into H street. Policeman Marquis, who was only permitting public utility ve- hicles and machines going to the wed- ding of Princess Cantacuzene and John Hanbury-Williams to proceed down H street, directed the man to go straight ahead. Carmody demurred, and was told to draw over to the curb. This he also refused to do on the ground that there was a fire plug there.
